Default Rundll32/setupx.dll error

When accessing the windows setup page of install/delete
programs, all I get is an error message that says Rundll32
has caused an error in Setupx.dll. The only escape from
this is to quit rundll32. After that, this setup page is
totally blank until the computer is rebooted...

The rest of Windows ME seems to run flawlessly and I would
appreciate any help to correct this error without having
to start from scratch with a new operating system and the
total setup of windows again.

Any help would be appreciated

You really do need to be a bit more careful when using that registry
cleaner you downloaded. :-)

Your setupx.dll error is usually the result of having deleted some empty
folders in Program Files that were placed there when Win Me was installed
that are used for optional components of Win Me. Then when the registry
cleaner was run it removed some necessary entries required for Add/Remove
Programs | Windows Setup to function because the target folders were no
longer present. You can avoid this happening in future by not deleting
such folders and similarly not deleting any values in the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\VarLDID

I would have attached a zip file containing a reg file containing all of
the required entries to my reply but since you are using the web
interface to these newsgroups rather than a proper newsreader you would
never see the attachment. If you want me to send you the repair patch
please e-mail me at .

There is no need to make multiple posts on the same problem and to also
e-mail those who have responded to those who have posted with similar
problems. One post is sufficient.
