Windows 98 SE setup error SU991010
I've got a machine I want to take from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE. I
got the Windows 98 SE update CD to do this. When I try to run setup, after the scandisk portion I get the dreaded SU991010 error. Setup itself suggests trying the install from a command prompt, but of course you can't do that with the Windows 98 SE update CD--it only runs from Windows 98. MS KnowledgeBase has a relevant article, one linked to all over the Web and one that seems to have solved the problem for lots of folks, the one that says this is caused by disk-locking in the BIOS or in anti-virus software. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem for me. I've disabled all anti-virus programs, and I've doublechecked that any BIOS protection/locking of the disk is disabled. I've tried running setup after a clean boot, w/ no tasks other than Systray and Explorer running. I've tried skipping the scandisk portion with "setup /is" but each time I get that SU991010. So AFAIK I've tried all the tips in SETUPTIP.TXT and in the MSKB article. Weirder still is that I tried the 98 SE update CD on a laptop I've got currently running Windows 98. Same error! And I tried the same troubleshooting steps on the laptop, and still get the error. There is almost nothing in common between the laptop and the first machine, and yet I see the same error. Anyone have any ideas for what the next step is in getting Windows 98 SE to install? Thanks. |

Hi Red,
Do you have any Norton applications installed? Maybe on both computers! As you mentioned, this error indicates the disk is being locked. The disk is most likely being locked at startup, and disabling running apps will not unlock it. I would suggest uninstalling any Norton apps and retrying the install. Performing a Clean Boot is another option before installing. After much fiddling, using the Advanced tab in MSCONFIG is what got me past the SU991010 error on the laptop--"Force compatibility mode disk access." When you do that, though, you lose access to local CD drives. I could still finish the install on the laptop because I could share the Windows 98 SE update CD from my other computer. Unfortunately, it won't work in reverse--no CD drive in the laptop. What's the workaround? Can I just try to copy the CD to the hard drive and run setup from there? Thanks. Yes, copy the contents of the CD to the hard drive and
retry the install. -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 "Red Chair" wrote "Bert Kinney" wrote: Performing a Clean Boot is another option before installing. Just to re-cap for the Google archives: to get around SU991010 not only did I have to copy the Win98SE update CD to the hard drive and then "Force compatibility mode disk access" to install, but then later the part where setup wants a license key ONLY accepted the key from ONE of my two existing valid copies of Win98. It wouldn't take the key that came with the Win98SE update CD, and it wouldn't take the key for the valid existing copy of Win98 on the laptop. Weird.
