Default "C" folder - 46 objects but not visible - registry problem?

I was looking for the remnants of some malware in the registry on hubbies
pc. I backed up the registry first and set a restore point. The cat appears
from nowhere and does a tap dance on the keyboard, closing regedit.

Now when you open the "C" (local drive) folder it is empty. Its reporting 46
objects but they dont show.

I have done a registry import from the back up I took but its still the
same. I went to do a system restore and the window is blank as well.

I booted into safe mode and the "C" contents is visible but the system
restore is still a blank window.

Everything seems to be working except some music files associated with media
player. The network is still working so I shared "C" and all files are
visible from another computer so am doing a back up that way.

I'm assuming something has been deleted from registry, any ideas? I've never
seen this one before.

Not sure how you did the Reg backup, but........ there is always SCANREG
/RESTORE
Just use that command in the dialog box of START|RUN and you should be
presented with 5 backups from different dates/times. IIRC, one is made by
the system for each successful boot......you should have a good one in
there. The nice part is, you can revert back to what you have now if it
doesn't do the trick. Just a swag on my part.......you may want to wait for
one of the gurus to confirm validity.

'Loom, speaking as one who has been mistakenly called a "guru" on more than
one occassion, but one who nonetheless does know he knows at least as much
as many who do not know enough to respectfully decline the same description
as applied to themselves, I rather suspect that the only thing that disbars
your own good rasping person from membership of that particular club at this
late hour is your own modesty.

Shane, I have it on good authority

I finally fixed the problem by running "regsvr32
%windir%\system\jscript.dll" in start run.

It was a bit scary finding an empty system restore window so I'm saving your
hint in case I run across this again. Thanks for that.

I'm still a little puzzled as to why "c" contents were visible in safe mode
while the restore window was still empty as they were both caused by the
same problem. Just one of the complexities of windows I suppose?

Thanks for sharing your resolution. Seems re-registering the jscript.dll
did the trick for you....good to know. Glad you got everything worked out.
I can't answer your question........best thing I can think of is "it's a
computer."
