Why does Wikipedia keep begging for foreign fonts?
Everytime I connect to Wikipedia, it keep getting asked to download
additional (foreign) fonts. (My settings are to ASK, not automatically download addons). I'm going to English sites, so there is no reason to need the fonts. I never download them, I cant read foreign languages anyhow. But everytime I go to wikipedia I got answer "NO" two to four times. It's annoying. This is for K-Meleon browser. |

Not sure why it stopped - possibly different browser/machine; I haven't been to Wikipedia on my old '98 for ages. (IIRR, Korean was a "popular" one.) Possibly a K-Meleon issue? Or maybe his specific version of it? Wonder if it happens to him with any other browser. |

It "happened" to you as in past tense? What did you do to fix it? Since I'm primarily using IE8 I don't know. I only use Firefox, or more often, Pale Moon, on special occasions, however. I'm not sure I ever fixed it: it's years since I saw it, but I'm now using Firefox (now 11, though I think from 3.x on) on XP; when I remember Wikipedia asking for extra fonts (actually IIRR it asked for a "package" or something, which might not have been just fonts), I was using a '98SElite machine, with the browsers shown (Netscape would have been probably version 7 - probably 7.2 - and Firefox version 2.x [I don't have Kernelex], though I don't think I had Firefox on it in the days I used to get this problem). IIRR I usually said no, and whatever Wiki page I was looking at still came up fine; I might have said yes once or twice (what it wanted to load was I think rather big for dialup use), and I _think_ it loaded OK but didn't change anything (including the asking). But this last part is very hazy memory. -- J. P. Gilliver. You also might consider Pale Moon, which I believe is more streamlined for windows, and not a bunch of OS's. At any rate, Pale Moon seems quicker to load for me (esp the first time). |

Why does Wikipedia keep begging for foreign fonts?
wikipedia on some pages(even English pages) utilises foreign fonts to
display names in their origin language like greek, hebrew etc..this might trigger a font download for the missing font. it seems you've set not to download fonts in internet options, this is only applicable for internet explorer and trident shells. k-meleon is a gecko browser and isn't affected by IE internet options. to disable font downloads in k-meleon: 1- in the urlbar type "about:config" without the quotes. alternatively you can access advanced settings by clicking on edit menu, select and expand the configuration submen and select 'browser configuration from there 2- in the advanced configuration window, search for this pref: gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled 3- by default it's set to true to enable downloading missing fonts, double click on it to set to false and disable missing fonts download. note: this is a universal preferance and not per site, meaning it will not just affect wikipedia but all websites. you might need to restart k-meleon for changed to take effect, browse to a wikipedia page for testing. if you're using k-meleon 1.1.x or 1.5.x series,; you might want to upgrade to the 1.6 beta release which is very stable, however it's NT based and will not run on windows 98 without the kernelex unofficial update which is available from this site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/ best of luck K-Meleon forum: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/ wrote in message ... Why does Wikipedia keep begging for foreign fonts? (Now browser thoughts.)

What's so good about the newer FF11? (I still have version FF ver 3.5 installed). I too was (am) uneasy about Firefox's upgrade rate (though it seems to have stopped for a moment - I just checked, and 11.0 is still up to date; AFAICR, it's been 11 for some time). Trouble is, I could never see an obvious point at which to stop it upgrading, and now am reluctant to go back, lest something (and yes, I don't know what!) I've grown used to working. You also might consider Pale Moon, which was coded for Windows, and not a bunch of OS's as is FF. At any rate, Pale Moon seems quicker to load for me. Yes, I keep hearing of it, mostly from people who're happy with it (or, it might be that it's always the same person, possibly you!). It's just lethargy on my part, and reluctance to learn (however small the differences) yet another browser. -- J. P. Gilliver.
