Registry and Task Bar Menu
On my task bar (toolbar at bottom of screen) I have 4 icons which must load
before I can activate any desktop icon. One is the Task Manager, which I do not use, another is the Volume Control, next is HP Digital Imaging Monitor and last is Pc-cillin Internet Security. These also appear in my Registry (there is a total of 20 items in the Registry). Can I uncheck the HP reference in the registry....then not have it load at startup...yet still access it via the Start...Program route? Can I do the same with Task Manager as I do not use this? My computer is very slow to load and I am looking for some solutions. Thanks. -- Using Windows 98SE, IE6 and Avant 10 Browsers and PC-cillin Internet Security |

There is no place to uncheck items in the registry so I believe you might be
referring to the startup tab on msconfig.exe. Here is my standard blurb on this issue: To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start up points and remove the reference to it: Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe): 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce\Setup There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Moosetoo" wrote in message news On my task bar (toolbar at bottom of screen) I have 4 icons which must load before I can activate any desktop icon. My computer is very slow to load and I am looking for some solutions. Thanks. Click on Start Settings Control Panel Network Configuration or right-click Network Neighborhood on the Desktop. Select Properties. Click to highlight the TCP/IP bound to the Ethernet card. Click to select Properties or just double-click the TCP/IP entry Select the IP Address tab, select Specify, and assign an internal IP address such as 192.168.0.10, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 After you have taken care of that, let us know how much free space you have on your hard drive. Also, check Device Manager for duplicate entries. That will slow any machine to a crawl. |

Hugh
I did as you suggested. There was an IP address already there (66.38.18.139) but I changed it as suggested. The Subnet mask was as suggested. I have two hard drives with 2998 MB on C and 5575MB on D. There appears to be no conflict in my Device Manager...no duplicate entries. Do I need to change the IP back to what it was? Ron ... I misspoke. I meant the System Config Utility. Can I uncheck an item there and still have accesss to it via the Start...Program...route? |

I have two hard drives with 2998 MB on C and 5575MB on D. If that is free space, and it probably is with those number ranges, then you are fine. There appears to be no conflict in my Device Manager...no duplicate entries. That's good. This is a process of elimination. Do I need to change the IP back to what it was? Only if you need to connect to the Duo County Telephone Cooperative. Ron ... I misspoke. I meant the System Config Utility. Can I uncheck an item there and still have accesss to it via the Start...Program...route? Yes. If there ever isn't a shortcut in C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs to a particular program or folder, you can go ahead and create one by dragging the mouse from the executable or folder to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs while holding down the right mouse button, then let go and select "Create shortcut". More questions. Have you run Scandisk and Defrag recently?. Do you have a background system scan configured in your virus scanner? In MSCONFIG's Startup area, do you have TaskMonitor enabled? Do you have MS Office installed? If so, do you have FindFast enabled? |

I have DSL through Duo-County, not dial up, so I'm not sure if I need to
reverse the IP number, but I will just to be safe. Answers: Have you run Scandisk and Defrag recently? Yes in past month. Do you have a background system scan configured in your virus scanner? If you mean real-time virus scan....yes. In MSCONFIG's Startup area, do you have TaskMonitor enabled? Yes Do you have MS Office installed? No Thanks for all the help and for being so fast with answering my posts. I really appreciate it. |
