Page cannot be displayed w/ either Wifi or DUN - need help!
I was recently given a Sony Vaio (from 2001 or so) Windows ME laptop by a
friend who had upgraded to a brand new machine. As he was traveling home with the old laptop, he connected via WiFi to free wireless access at an airport. During this session (apparently), "something happened", and "screwed something up". I guess he didn't know particulars. He didn't think it was serious. A couple days later, he brought the laptop with him to a mall with free wireless, and while he was able to contact and access the signal, he could not resolve any internet sites. He was perplexed, but he was leaving the next day for a new job with the new laptop and didn't get a chance to look deeper into it. When I received the laptop, I configured it for my home dialup. I'm a very average computer user (not quite a newbie, but nowhere near an expert), but I'd done this many times before, and never had a problem. I dialed up my local ISP, and connected like always with no problem. Only, just as the problem my friend had with the Wifi, all I got when I opened either Mozilla or IE is a timeout and "Page cannot be displayed". There are no proxies or firewalls active. All my TCP/IP settings in DUN are correct. DNS and IP are assigned automatically, etc. I called my ISP (twice), and other than confirming my settings were just as they should be, they were of no assistance. I cannot ping either direct IP or domains. I can ping myself at 127.0.0.1. I can ping my own IP address that shows up with winipcfg. I removed all network adaptors and protocols, adding back only these: Client MS Networks Dial-up adapter NDIS 1394 Net Adapter TCP/IP - Dial-up adapter TCP/IP - NDIS 1394 Net Adapter Here are my ipconfig results: DNS Servers... 209.105.157.2 209.105.128.2 Node Type..... Broadcast NetBios Scope ID.... - IP Routing Enabled.. NO WINS Proxy Enabled.. NO Net Bios Resolution Uses INS.. NO 0 Ethernet Adapter Description: PPP Adaptor Physical Address: 44-45-53-54-00-00 DHCP Enabled: YES IP Address: 209.105.159.201 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 209.105.159.201 DHCP Server: 255.255.255.255 Primary Wins Server - Secondary Wins Server - I have uninstalled and reinstalled DUN. No change. I've tried many (if not all) of the various Winsock (or Winsock2) fixes I've found on the web. No change. My friend left a copy of the WinME CD on the HD, and I even reinstalled ME. Not a reformatting reinstall, as I didn't want to lose many of the good programs he has. No change. Basically I've been at this on and off for a couple weeks, and still can't find a fix. I'm sure I've tried many fixes that I haven't even mentioned, but my head is kind of swimming at this point and it's hard to recall them all. I do know that I've seen this exact problem mentioned in some older threads here and in ME/Internet by some very frustrated people, but I haven't seen that many solutions offered. At least none that have worked for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

I don't think your default Gateway can be the same as your own IP address, at least I've never seen this. Call back your ISP and confront them with this. Let them give you another Gateway or at least let them give you a reasonable explanation how the machine that is trying to connect to the internet is using itself to access it. Let others confirm with their setting. Is there anybody who has it's own IP address as Gateway? René |

René It's normal for the default gateway to be the same as the IP address for a dial-up Internet connection. It wouldn't be OK for an Internet connection that uses a local area network. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
