Default Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so

For several days now my puter freezes up abuot every 30 seconds and remains frozen for about 30 seconds. It's not the mouse. When it freezes I click on the caps lock and it does not respond. I've tried rebooting, drafragmenting, anti virus, disc cleanup. Nothing works. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jen

Default Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so

Jen -

Some sites which may help:
http://aumha.org/a/tshoot.htm
http://aumha.org/a/health.htm
http://www.aumha.org/
http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q...sp-p=all&sp-w-

Then there is the old "check for spyware" suggestions:
First, install the programs and then update them immediately, so that they
have the current versions, and definitions. Read the HelpFiles and
Tutorials. Run them one at a time. With Ad-Aware you may have it generally
clean whatever it finds. The same applies for CWShredder. Spybot S&D
requires special attention (listed below), as does HijackThis (Only more so.
Details listed below) The programs are listed in order of their general
strength, safety, and purpose. It is perhaps best to install and run these
in this order of appearance.

Ad-Aware

CWShredder (cleans all Cool Web Search malware)

http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index1.php
http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index2.php
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=43

This item below is designed to *prevent* installation of malware and the
like by comparing known CLSID's of these "bad guys" with what is in its
definitions. It doesn't remove anything, nor will it fix anything that is
already in your PC. Rather, it will prevent installation or re-installation
of the item once
it has been removed either manually, or by the use of another program which
will perform the duty of removing the spyware.

SpywareBlaster (prevents installation of spyware, Trojans, etc.)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
SpywareBlaster Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=49

If you use Spybot S & D, be sure to clean *ONLY* the items displayed in
*RED*. DO NOT clean any items displayed in Black or Green at this time.

Lastly there is HijackThis. Hijack this is a very powerful, last resort type
of program which is generally best used in conjunction with help from those
who deal with the findings of the log created by the HijackThis scan. It
does nothing in the scan itself; it merely says what is in and running on
your PC. The items must be checked-marked to be "cleaned". Therein is the
issue; you must know *exactly* what you are checking-off before you proceed.
If you don't, you can quite possibly disable many useful and vital functions
of your PC. Remember; read the Tutorials, and seek help at SpywareInfo
Forums, Net-Integration, or TomCoyote forums for safety's sake.

Run MSCONFIG. Look in Startup.

Is FINDFAST enabled? TASKMON?

Default Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so

Probably LuckyStrike & Candlin are onto it. Still, you do not say you
ran a Scandisk...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q287914
Articles about Scandisk
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q286263
Articles about Defrag

I must warn that Scandisk may not do a great job when there is a
great one to do...
http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/scandisk.htm
Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front
screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it sounds
truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be
"C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either.

1. Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver--
None)
2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management-- Always
On,Never,Never,Never)
3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps.
4. Suspend Task Scheduler
5. Turn off interfering programs. Use "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2" from
PCMag (below). Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". Note what is
unchecked. Then, go to the General tab & disable the entire Startup
Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot.
Don't forget to re-enable before the next boot.
6. Use "HDValet" from PCMag, or
(a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete
all offline content, OK, OK"
(b) "START, Run, %TEMP%", & delete all files that will let you. This
will likely be "C:\Windows\Temp". This is best done after a fresh boot,
unless you have not seen the message "Reboot to complete this install".
7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all three
items under "Scandisk, Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If you
want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck "Automatically fix errors"
on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.)
8. "START, Run, Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the
unmovables.

The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of
Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them; but DEFINITELY turn off the Virus
Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and certainly
after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when
this says so:
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's CrackUp, by Gregory A. Wolking & Bob Flanders.
Also, take DiskAction, to determine what is constantly writing to the
HDD, which causes the restarts. Take BHOCop & StartupCop too.

"DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes that access any partition. It
discovered the MS Critical Update Notification Tool was accessing my
HDD every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally, "START, Windows Update" on
your own.

"BHOCop" found a Browser Helper Object called Wavehelper Class, created
by "Wavetop", that was building a monstrosity of an error log called
"Logit.txt" in here. "START, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one?

Now, my hard drive is quieter than my mouse. (Of course, I now also have
384 MB RAM, up from an initial 64, eliminating Swap File activity.)

Candlin would be a lot wiser than I in this matter. Adjustment: Most,... if
not all PC matters.

I had forgotten about Fastfind. But it only seemed to make my Hard Drive run
on a very regular basis; not freeze or anything like that. Taskmon,
Fastfind, and Osa.exe have been disabled for so long, I had simply forgotten
about them.

Open Control Panel, & click the Power Management icon. At the Power
Schemes tab...

(a) Select "Always on" from the Power Schemes dropdown menu.
(b) Set System Standby to "Never".
(c) Set Turn Off Monitor to "Never".
(d) Set Turn Off Hard Disks to "Never".

That is what is meant by "Always on,Never,Never,Never". I do it, because
something once was constantly writing to my hard drive. It may not have
been that, but I still have a Sleep button on my keyboard that works
regardless of those settings.

Hmmm. ... and yet *another "good" thing about it. Not.

Since I don't use Taskmon, I guess that would account for why I've never had
much stuff (and nothing for a long time) in the Applog folder. Do you think
it really benefits the results after a defrag?

| Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front
| screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it
sounds
| truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be
| "C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either.
|
| 1. Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver--
| None)
| 2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management--
Always
| On,Never,Never,Never)
| 3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps.
| 4. Suspend Task Scheduler
| 5. Turn off interfering programs. Use "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2"
from
| PCMag (below).
| 6. Use "HDValet" from PCMag, or
| (a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt
Delete
| all offline content, OK, OK"
| (b) "START, Run, %TEMP%", & delete all files that will let you.
This
| will likely be "C:\Windows\Temp". This is best done after a fresh
boot,
| unless you have not seen the message "Reboot to complete this
install".
| 7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all
three
| items under "Scandisk, Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If
you
| want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck "Automatically fix
errors"
| on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.)
| 8. "START, Run, Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the
| unmovables.
|
| The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of
| Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them; but DEFINITELY turn off the
Virus
| Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and certainly
| after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when
| this says so:

Default Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so

I never tried Defrag any other way than with it enabled. So, how would I
know? It never HAS caused a problem that I ever detected. The theory of
it is sound. Finally, I am much impressed with "Optlog.txt". (Let me go
look at it-- oooo, niiiice!) Here are the apps that made my top ten
list...
