Default Maintenance Wizard.....defragmenter, cleanup disks not working

I did not defrag the computer for 6 months to a year.
The result is I can't get the maintenance tools
defregmenter ,cleanup disks etc to work. Therefore the
machine is very slow !!!

Can anyone assist please?

I have heard a number of suggestions like store my
favorites, files etc on CDs or Backup and re-run the
original Windows 98 SE disks.

What is the safest and quickest method so that I wilnot
lose any existing info currently on the computer ?

Hi Bob,

Does Defrag work if you go to Start - Run and type Defrag then
press enter?

Here are a few tips to consider when running Scandisk and Defrag.
1. Restart to the Command Prompt and do a thorough Scandisk on the
drive first and repair any errors.
Restart the computer. Hold down the CTRL key while the system is
booting. This will take you to the Boot Menu then select Command
Prompt Only. Run Scandisk on the drive from there by typing SCANDISK
then press enter and let it perform a surface scan.
2. Close all running programs using Close Programs (Ctrl + Alt + Del)
except Explorer.
3. Turn off screen savers and any power management
4. Delete Temp files and Temporary Internet Files
5. Empty the Recycle Bin
6. Do a virus scan with up to date virus software

7. Disable PC-Cillin if installed
8. Turn off and disconnect DSL/Cable Modem
9. Run Ad-aware to remove any possible spyware

Note: Defragging in Safe Mode is another option.

Mean to you ?

They don't start at all?
They start but never finish etc?

Try in safe mode.

If your computer is fairly fast (over 1HGz in speed), I really doubt
that your slowdown problem is due to fragmentation.
If you have 100+ items in My Documents, move them to another folder
(try it temporarily, at least).
Try booting to the command prompt and run scandisk from there.
Try running defrag in Safe Mode.
Perhaps a software problem or virus or malware.
Do an free virus scan online.
Download, install, update and run:
SpyBot
AdAware
