| | | | | PIN SETTINGS FOR DRIVE:
| | | | | Check the pin setting on hard drive:
| | | | | Master Slave
| | | | | . . . . . . . .
| | | | | . . . . . . . .
| | | | | jumper none
| | | | |
| | | | | CHECK settings on CDROM [should be a diagram on the
| housing,
| | check
| | | to
| | | | make
| | | | | sure this is correct]:
| | | | |
| | | | | MASTER SLAVE
| | | | | . . . . . .
| | | | | . . . . . .
| | | | |
| | | | | If on primary IDE channel/ribbon, CD must be set as
| slave.
| If
| | on
| | | | | secondary
| | | | | IDE channel/ribbon, CD should be master.
| | | | |
| | | | | The hard drive has no jumper on the pins.
| | | | | The CD is set to master. It is on the secondary IDE
| channel.
| | Both
| | | | drives
| | | | | are the only ones on their respective channels.
| | | | |
| | | |
| | | | The hard drive is ON the primary but as a SLAVE, NOT
correct
| | without
| | | a
| | | | master, this will cause errors.. you need to figure out a
way
| to
| | get
| | a
| | | | properly jumpered setup.
| | | |
| | | | OK, so I'm thinking this is an easy fix and I'm really liking
| it.
| I
| | | pull
| | | | out the hard drive (I have a few spare jumpers lying around)
and
| | take
| | a
| | | look
| | | | only to see something totally baffling. There is a diagram on
| top
| | of
| | | the
| | | | hard drive for the different configurations, master, slave,
and
| | cable
| | | | select. It looks like this...
| | | |
| | [deleted]
| | | |
| | | | Then I look at the back of the hard drive where the pins are
and
| see
| | | this...
| | | |
| | | | . . .
| | | |
| | | | Does the left hand not know what the right hand is doing at
| Compaq?
| | The
| | | | diagram shows 3 double rows but it actually has 3 single rows.
| Do
| I
| | | jumper
| | | | the 2 on the left? Or maybe I go get a large hammer and...
| | | |
| | | | Dazed and Confused,
| | | | Urge
| | |
| | | Well your not the only one. According to the shown Quantum
| Fireball
| | that
| | | was supposedly found, the settings I presented were correct per
| the
| | info
| | | from the Seagate/Maxtor/Quantum site [and saved info locally,
| cross
| | | checked
| | | there].
| | |
| | | Did you look at the bottom of the hard drive? Here's a kick,
old
| | Conners
| | | and other drives sometimes had their jumpers on the bottom of
the
| | drive.
| | | Might not hurt to check.
| | |
| | | Bingo, the jumpers were on the bottom of the drive. They were ser
| to
| | cable
| | | select. I changed it to master following the diagram on top of
the
| | drive
| | | (which looked exactly like what I saw on the bottom).
| |

[major removal of info]

|
| So you show no IDE bus mastering or other control on the other,, did
this
| computer come with any disks?
|
| In the processor and memory module of the computer setup section on the
| diagnostic partition it has a PCI bus master enable/disable checkbox that
| is set to enable. No, the computer came with nothing other than what was
on
| the hard drive which I wiped.

Okay.

|
| |
| | Hardware Resources-Memory
| |
| | It makes reference to a PnP BIOS here.

| | How about in Device Manager for the CDROM, and hard drive?
| |
| | No change
| |
| | Have you checked for the drive in DOS yet?
| |
| | Yes, it still doesn't work.
|
| Did you try the dang sys file and autoexec.bat and config.sys yet to
see
| if
| that helps, or what or how are you testing this...
|
| I haven't tried putting in the DOS driver from the lite-on disk in
| Config.sys etc.but will give it a shot hopefully tonite.
| My original thought was to capture an image of a pristine system to make
any
| possible reinstalls on two identical computers quicker and easier in the
| future. Since I have already negated any savings this is just an exercise
| in stubbornness on my part ( I have a lot of Irish in me). SO, all the
| settings in the setup section on the diagnostics partition comprise my
| CMOS-is this correct? If so, I can only change what I see in there. Am I
| stuck with this intermittent inability to restart without opening the CD
| drawer? What could have caused this? Could it be a battery issue? I
hate
| to mention this because the battery is soldered in. In another life I was
| an electronics tech. so I would be willing to attempt replacing it if I
| could find something comparable but maybe/hopefully this isn't an issue.
| For whatever reason it would appear to me that this computer is not going
to
| play nice with my Lite-on burner.
|
| Urge

Change that ribbon cable to ensure we have no potential cable select
issues.

IN SUMMARY:

We have corrected the issue of no BIOS/CMOS/specialty partition, apparently
required by Compaq in its proprietary aspects.
We have corrected [to a point] a cleared CMOS.
We have established the LiteOn CDROM appears to be usable in a system with
this processor speed and memory.
We have configured the Master/Slave relationships.
We have checked MSinfo32 and Aida, and they appear to indicate that the
settings are close to normal as compared to a general system/MB such as mine
[mine however does have a separate listing for the Bus Master chipset/driver
and its addressings].

Since we have repeatedly looked through the diag/F10 issues, and you see
nothing useful there, I'll have to bow to your findings.

I had hoped that someone across the world with a Compaq DeskPro 5100
workstation would have jumped in here with their 9X findings/suggestions. My
searches [and there were many] have turned up none related to 9X, one or two
related to NT or 2000 or XP, but mostly with people using the system with
Linux or BSD [or other Unix clones]. Those relate, in part, to issues with
the Triflex chipset, or other board related aspects. How relevant those
would be to your issues are beyond my ability to cross check, so I have not
brought these [for the most part] to this discussion.
Obviously I have no ability to actually install the partition and
tools/etc. so I could perhaps find something you may have overlooked or is
not so obvious related to settings which may have helped.

You question whether some issues may be caused by an old CMOS battery: that
would be YES, the 10+ years taken with the likely discharged/recharged
aspects would suggest replacement. I have found that, if one can not find
the actual battery, at times, you can use a mobile phone battery [not a cell
phone battery] as long as it is of comparable voltage and m/amp rating and
its a rechargeable battery your replacing; OR if a pill/plate style
[non-rechargeable], using the same voltage-m/amp hour comparison and
modifying the connection/holder, if necessary. I would suggest doing so for
those other two as well. This could be why you have a 1900 time/date
setting, and might cause issues when powered down [loss of settings], but
again, I can not verify this as I can not review what is saved and where
concerning the special partition/Compaq proprietary aspects. But yes, you
should replace the battery, then once again, check the setup/diagnostics and
set what you can, prior to working on the below aspects.
You could check it with a multi-meter but the age suggests replacement
regardless.

Since we have worked through most of the hardware issues [save for the
battery], it now seems that *Windows Registry* settings and *DOS driver*
issues should be addressed to their fullest extent. Aspects related to
auto-run and other related registry settings MAY now be instrumental in
finalizing your issues in Windows. And specialized autoexec.bat and
config.sys files and/or additions to your DriveImage DOS disk MAY also help.

These would be in the realm of the shell/DOS/etc. MVPs' and others'
knowledge, so I will step aside for their discussions with you.

Hopefully they are still monitoring this discussion. I will give them and
you a few days to work out the details, before any further postings by
myself should they be necessary.

Good luck ...

|
| |
| | And finally:
| |
| | Though you've never had to use the DOS sys file for the CDROM
| before,
| | you
| | MAY just have to use it with this computer for your DOS activities.
| Did
| | you
| | ever explain WHY you just had to have plain DOS support anyway?
| |
| | If you mean why I need Drive Image to work in DOS it's because I can't
| | capture an image of everything in Windows when it's running.

Default Dealing with special hard drive partitions

Urge, if your still there and you have that battery replaced; check out this
discussion since it is dealing with some of the settings which would relate
to your Windows CDROM issues.

CHECK OUT PCR, Bill and Franc's postings.
