Default IE 6 needs repair

Greeting due to some electrical storms over the last couple of day our IE
6 is not working correctly..
(will only access websites for about 10 minutes then refuses to access
anything)(have to restart the computer to get any new access)
(also noticed that our WS-FTP program has stopped accessing sites as well)

OE works normally and the MSN IM also works normal..

isn't there some way to have the IE repair itself?

Tks,
RTS

You can repair Internet Explorer using Add/Remove Programs. Locate and
highlight the entry "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6SP1 and Internet Tools",
now click Add/Remove and you will find the option to Repair. Note, I
would very strongly advise that you create a system restore checkpoint
before continuing, "just in case".

See MS KB 194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair tool"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=194177). This article also applies to
IE6 although not mentioned in the article.

Under the circumstances, as only in 'the last couple of days' and if you
haven't made major changes recently then perhaps a System Restore back to
three? days ago might just resolve it - assuming the storms haven't damaged
any hardware.

If not, try Noel's "Uninstalling and Re-installing IE" at :-

Default IE 6 needs repair

FYI Mike,
the repair of the ie 6 didn't help..
its seems with some trial and error experimenting I located the problem
to be the Zone Alarm Firewall program.. It has screwed up the IE to the
point it can't be removed.
If I remove the Zone Alarm Firewall program the IE 6 stops working..
Even after I do a repair on the IE 6, it reaches out from the grave of
removed program and stops the browser..

It seems when the Zone Alarm Firewall program is removed it creates another
archive file thats causing the problem..

Thanks anyway..

Mart, the rollback seems to be the only way i can get the IE 6 to work..
There is a Zone Alarm Firewall on the machine that can't be removed
without crashing the browser..

Everything I've tried so far won't correct the problem..
Its the Zone Alarm Firewall thats the problem..

It's also screwing up the startup of the machine..
2 out of 3 attempts at startup require a scandisk to get the machine to
run..

Tried removing the Zone Alarm Firewall but when i do the browser
crashes..

Zone Alarm Firewall 6.1.744.001

Thanks for the effort..

Zone Alarm Firewall 6.1.744.001

FWIW, as far as I remember, that version shouldn't be used on
WinME.....I believe you should stick to the Version 5.xxxxx ones. In
fact, I have version 5.5 on XP even though it is inactive. I know there
was a problem with one of the Version 6 ones, but perhaps someone else
can tell you.

Maybe you could replace it with an older version and then the browser
hopefully won't crash. Try www.oldversion.com to get an older one.

Good luck.....Heather

This is really good advice, Heather and not only for the 'Squirrel'.
It comes in handy in a lot of cases, especilly for WinME.
My complements and thanks.

Harry.

Rocky,

Try a clean uninstall of ZA using the following steps, and then complete
the repair on IE.

quote

In order to perform a clean uninstall of ZoneAlarm, please follow the
steps below:

IMPORTANT - If you have a Cisco VPN client installed, you must first
uninstall the VPN client, then follow the instructions below, and
reinstall the Cisco VPN client again afterwards. This procedure will
remove all traces of the TrueVector service, which was incorporated by
Cisco into their VPN software.

* If you wish to keep your settings, create a Backup from Overview
- Preferences before starting, and then Restore afterwards (available
in ZoneAlarm Premium products only).
* Click on Start - Programs - Zone Labs
* RIGHT-click on Uninstall Zone Labs Security, then select Properties
* Under Target you will see the following line (the actual drive
may be different on your system):

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninstexe"

* Change it to:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean
(add a space and then the /clean)

* Click OK to save the new command line.
* In ZoneAlarm (Overview - Preferences - General), clear Load
ZoneAlarm at startup, and then reboot.
* Click on Start - Programs - Zone Labs - Uninstall Zone Labs
Security
* Click OK to run the uninstaller, and OK any security alerts that
pop up.
* say "Yes when being prompted for the removal of all files and
allow TrueVector to shut down.
* Reboot
* After rebooting, check for the following folders, and delete them
if you find them:

"Internet Logs"

"Zone Labs" (under your Program Files folder)

"Zonelabs" (under your Windows System32 folder)

* Empty your recycle bin
* Reboot
* install the latest version if you are reinstalling

quote

Zonealarm 6.1.744.001 is the last version that you can use with WinME.
