Default It starts-up by itself when it is shutdown

My ME system starts up by itself within about an hour after being shutdown. I
have AVG, spy-bot,spyware blaster, and ad-ware. All are updated and running
fine. One thing I have noticed when you shutdown the num lock light stays on
so I turn it off just before shutdown but the computer turns back on again. I
also uninstalled ME and reinstalled again but the problem is still there. No
freeze-ups,lock-ups or any other strange behavor. Could this be a low battery
making it come back on again or what. I cant find anything to prove or
disprove that idea. I have turned the power strip off and that takes care of
it of course. Any ideas?

Hi Kevin

I have looked at your post and awaited a response from one of the gurus
here. It appears that they must be elsewhere tonight. I'm afraid that I can
not advise you how to cure the problem but I would like to suggest the
following:

1) Make a backup of your data. At least you will have your data if the
machine deteriorates.

2) Boot up and depress the F5 key during the boot process. This will take
you to safe mode. It is good to know that you can start in safe mode if the
need arises.

3) Boot up and depress the F8 key during the boot process. This will allow
you to select the BOOTLOG.TXT option. When Windows starts, copy the
BOOTLOG.TXT file to a diskette. It is handy to have a valid BOOTLOG.TXT file
should a technical person have to look at your computer.

I'm sorry that I can be of no further help. Do keep calling back here for a
few days, though. There are some very knowledgeable people in this forum.

Check the BIOS options - make sure that all 'Wake On...' options are
disabled.
It may also be that you are actually going into hibernation rather than
shutting down, by using the power button - are you holding it in for 4
seconds or not? Is the power button set for Shutdown or for Standby or
Hibernation in BIOS, or in the Power Settings in control panel??

Maybe it's shutdown into standby or hibernate mode. Is your modem/LAN set
(may even be in your BIOS) to wake-up on an active signal?

USB or other ACPI devices connected?

Check your Power Options in Control Panel.

See also "The Universal Serial Bus (USB) Wakeup Device Is Unable to Awaken
Computer from Hibernation" for some insight and pointers.

Well, no - but I have sent a few Christmas cards to eastern Canada from the
UK over the years and they've always arrived safely enough. Don't know if
that counts g

Good luck

The machine I built for my kids does this. It has an option to turn the
machine off and on from the keyboard. The notes with the motherboard said that
keyboards would keep their LEDs on because they were not being powered off
since it was a soft-power motherboard.

For what it's worth, my own computer also has this feature, and is also a
soft-power motherboard. But the disable for keyboard on/off is by a jumper
rather than a BIOS setting. The LEDs all go off on this one.
