You should have time - I reckon it'll be at least 18 months yet.

As for hardware, what is currently a high-spec machine should be able
to run it without any problems - IIRC the target was for something
like a 1400MHz box, with 256MB RAM and 64MB graphics as a minimum
spec (which probably translates to 2GHz, with 512MB RAM and 128MB
graphics as being something that'll run acceptably fast).
I suspect that taking WinFS out of the equation has actually dropped
the processor requirement slightly - but other things may come into
play.

I think my 17" LCD is big enough for me at the moment at 1024x768 but then
again unlike you I don't watch TV on it vbg
I see another blue cheese fan g

Longhorn currently takes up acres of space and if a user runs it in
full eye candy mode definitely needs a widescreen monitor due to the
massive bar (can't remember the fancy name for it) down the right
hand side of the screen.

As for me I'm sticking with this 19" CRT (in reality probably more
like 18") which I run at 1280 x 1024. Whilst I'd like to replace it
with a TFT it won't be until I can afford a 1600 x 1200 20" if not a
widescreen 1920 x 1200. Me thinks that is pure wishful thinking but
am praying for the day the moon turns blue (due to all the cheese). :-)

Hang in there, Mike.......someday they will be as cheap as the CRT's
are now. Of course, that will be after the new 3-D holographic
monitors are on the market g.

Phew. Where do you put your furniture? :-) I had no idea you had
so much equipment going at once.....your power bill must be
atrocious. The only item I recognized was the PII-450, since I am
still running this ol' PII-400. Would it be worth my while to set up
the VPC, since this is my only machine and I am on a cable modem?
Sure wish you were my neighbor.....you would be a handy person to
have around g. Heirloom

LOL

As for VPC, I need to check but think that it only runs on XP Pro - I used
to think it could also run on XP Home but apparently not. I'll check it
out later. How much RAM does your PII have? And storage? I've had no
real problems running XP on the PII 450 although I have to admit I've
never tried installing and running VPC. I might give it a whirl this
weekend and let you know how I get on.

I know what you mean about that lot taking up room. You should see my
network printer (HP4550) it weighs about 120lb or so and is a great big
hunk of a piece. Power bills aren't too bad even though I tend to have
three PCs up and running 24/7. The celeron 400, an AMD XP2500+ (1GB RAM
and four disks totalling around 500GB) and this box an AMD 64 3200+ again
with 1GB of RAM and three disks totalling about 500GB. It could just be
that I've grown used to the cost. Of course, being London I don't have
any a/c to worry about. :-).

One of the biggest items though is the 19" CRT monitor on my desk which
I'd love to replace by a decent sized TFT monitor but not at current
prices. I have two "work stations", that is monitor, keyboard and mouse,
setup and use a four way and two way KVM switch, one at each workstation,
to switch between the various boxes with one of the ways on the four way
box space to allow me to hitch in "visiting" PCs that are in for repair
etc.

Did the Krell live there before you moved in, Mike?

You never cease to amaze me, Shane.....you are a regular storehouse of
knowledge, trivial yes, but, knowledge just the same. And you should note:

According to Dr. Morbius, the Krell were a million years ahead of humans,
both ethically and technologically.

Heirloom, old and we should have Longhorn by then
