Default "Open With" ? Help I need to find how to change this

I tried to open a file the other night and it said to
click on open with NotePad and to make sure to check the
Always open using so that it was off, well I read it wrong
and I checked the stupid box. Now I need to uncheck it
and I have found a file or two with the "Open with" and I
click on notepad again and uncheck that box but it wont
save. Please does anyone know how I can fix this?? I
went thru this a few years ago but I dont remember how to
fix it. My anti-virus updater is not working and I went
to the website and they told me how to fix it and this is
when I screwed up. Please Help.

1. Theory of "file association" available via
/ start / help / index "file"
"associating with programs."

2. Practical:
-- choose a data file type
-- choose the right app
-- select (highlight) data file and / Shift + Right Click
-- select option Open With
-- select correct app
-- leave the "Always" box unchecked
-- double click to open.

If successful, repeat this and check the box.

Default "Open With" ? Help I need to find how to change this

For simple associations (just "open" I guess), you may...

(a) Highlight any file of that particular type
(b) Hold Shift & R-Clk it, to get "Open with...." again.
(c) Check the "Always open with..." box at botttom.
(d) Select the proper app from the window.

However, if you still don't know what to associate it with... To
disassociate it...

"START button, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab".

Use the D-Arrow to slowly scroll the list, all the while looking for
that file type to appear at "Extension:". At long last, while it is
highlighted, click "Remove". If the extension is, for instance, ".xyz"
you may first quickly scroll the list & look for "XYZ File". Remove that
one.

But make no guesses. If you cannot remember what that file type
(extension) was, post back. Terhune will put you under hypnosis with a
mile-long dissertation--- & shock your memory!

What kind of a file was it? Do you need to correct the file association so
a different program opens it or just get rid of the notepad association?

Default "Open With" ? Help I need to find how to change this

I need to get rid of the notepad association. Most of my
files have gone to the Notepad association and some of
them wont open now because it is the wrong thing to open
it in. I was trying to fix my Norton anti-virus update
problem and I clicked to Always open with, and I shouldnt
have and it changed most of the other files.
I have found a couple of files that still have the Open
with but I dont know what to open a dav or a bmk file with
so I dont want to mess with it.

Open Explorer, click on view, folder options, file types tab and scroll down
to the first file extension that has a bad association, highlight it and
click the remove button. This only removes the association--not the file
type.
