Adding Wireless LAN - conflict with built-in network?

Here's my situation:

I have a IBM Thinkpad T20 with built-in network. It works fine on the
network using TCPIP protocol using the built-in network adaptor. It's
IP address is fixed (as all on my network have been).

I've added a 3com 3CRWE154G72 PCMCIA Wireless LAN adaptor using the
latest driver on the 3com website.

I can only access the WLAN network if I disable the internal network
adaptor in control panel.

I did have Netbuei also installed and could access some computers
(those also with Netbeui) over the WLAN with the built-in network
enabled.

The WLAN card is getting an IP address from the DHCP server in my ADSL
modem, which also acts as the networks gateway.

Is there a way that Win 98 can use multiple network adaptors with
TCPIP (only one will be active at a time - either the wireless or
without the wireless card fitted a wired connection) and not have to
have the adaptor not wanted disabled in control panel?

I am using the same card but talking to a 3com access point instead of an
ADSL access point. When I first installed the card, I already had a 3com
3C589E 10Mb network card installed. 'ROUTE PRINT' in a DOS window suggested
that the routing was ok for both but they had the same metric. However in
practice, the 3c589E always seemed to be the preferred route so the wireless
card never got any traffic. Unfortunately, the network setup tools are fairly
dumb in this respect and don't seem to have been designed for more than one
network card. I have recently re-installed Win98 and am now just using the
wireless card and this seems to work. There is another serious problem but I
have not yet managed to pin it on the wireless card, it is this: Win98 seems
to have short periods (2 to 5 seconds) in which the clock stops, the mouse
and keyboard stop responding and disk activity stops, this occurs at
intervals of between 20 secs and several minutes. It is as though the
interrupts get turned off for a few seconds and then back on again. I never
saw these symptoms with the old installation and the 3c589E card.

I probably have not been much help, but I would be interested to hear of
your experiences with the 3com wireless card.
