Default System window opens every time computer boots...

I am working on a Windows 98SE system and every time the
computer boots into Win98SE, the System window opens
showing all the files contained in the C:\Windows\System
directory.

I remember reading in one of my PC Magazines about this
problem and it being related to something that's missing.
But, since I have been using WinXP and haven't worked on a
Win98 machine in a long time, my mind is "rusty".

So... anyone know why the C:\Windows\System folder window
keeps opening everytime the Win98SE machine is booted??

Go to Start\Run box, type in MSINFO32, click OK. Gets you to System Information.
Expand the Software Environment, then click on Startup Programs.

What's most likely occurring is that one of the commands in there includes a
long filename with spaces in it, but lacks the enclosing double-quotes to keep
the command interpreter from stopping short of reading the entire command. All
it sees is C:\Windows\System\ and interprets that as a command to open that
directory.

Having this occur for the System folder is a bit unusual. If you have any
trouble figuring out what to do, or which command it may be that's causing the
problem, or if nothing looks amiss, you can copy the contents of that Startup
Programs pane from MSINFO32 to a reply message here. Click anywhere in the
right-hand pane, press Ctrl-A to select all, the Ctrl-C to copy it. Then Ctrl-V
to paste it into the message.
