Hello.

I am using Windows 98 SE on a Dell Laptop CPi machine. Frequently, when I
start the machine, I keep getting a message saying "Windows Protrection
Error. You have to restart yoiur computer". When I restart the machine, it
always asks me if I want to boot in Normal mode / Safe mode, etc....I choose
Normal mode, and it works fine.

Could someone please help with what this is about, and how I can fix it ?

Thanks

Zahid

It sounds like you have some component with a cracked circuit board or other
hardware that makes good contact once warmed up but not necessarily when
cold.

If you restart your machine when warm, do you get this message or only when
you turn it on after not running for a while? Just before this started
happening, did you add or remove any software or hardware? Drop the
computer? Spill on it? Were there power irregularities when it was
connected to power?

Generally speaking, if the problem is software related, you should get the
same behavior each time you go through the same steps and if this behavior
differs, then the problem is generally caused by failing hardware or a card
or memory module that is not seated firmly or is virus related.

When you boot normally, the system loads the same files in the same order
that it did the time before (unless you make some changes) so you should
expect the same behavior.

Since this is a laptop, if this computer is still under warrantee, I would
contact Dell. If it's not under warrantee, I'd check what you can and then
making sure that all of your important files are backed up, I'd probably run
the restore that came with your system. This would also require
reinstalling all of your programs so it's a major step but it also is like
starting fresh with your computer as it was when it was new. I've found
that when you suspect hardware problems, the support staff of your computer
manufacturer is much more likely to agree with your assessment if you have
restored the system back to it's new state and the problem still occurs.
When you have a bunch of third party software installed, they are much more
likely to put the blame on that - and there are times that this is where the
problem lies.
