Default Missing Icons from Start Button -

My Dad's computer is missing all of the icons on his start button. We
did the normal defrag and scan disk but hasn't been able to run his
visus checker (via AOL).

He also apparently can't open up some AOL email documents. When someone
came over to help troubleshoot it the following odd questions were
asked. 1) Does he have a second computer attached to the first one
(never) 2) When he called AOL they mentioned that he had called last
Friday (the day the problem started) but he in fact didn't. (perhaps my
mom did and screwed the computer up).

Is there a virus that would cause this to happen? ie make the icons on
the start button dissapear.

You should be able to run the virus checker without opening AOL. There
is only one person on this group familiar with AOL and all of its
dubious benefits.....Noel Paton. If he can't answer you, I would
suggest you phone AOL again and get them to help you out.

Haven't heard of a virus that would do this......but then again, not
sure what a "start button" is....

Get a better ISP than AOL......they overcharge and are extremely
proprietary. Not to mention cr*ppy.

Just my honest 2 cents worth.....Heather

By Start Button, do you mean the Task Bar?

AOL provide McAfee Online as AV - which to my mind rather defeats the
object.... so I've stayed well clear!

If I'm not mistaken, he means "Quick Launch", next to the "Start" button.
That situation can easily be remedied by locating the folder and placing the
desired itmes in it.
If the entire folder is missing, one can be created.
Hope that helps.

Harry.
