remote desktop connection using vpn and dial up connection

Hi, I need to establish a remote connection to my office from a laptop. I
have done this with another laptop using win xp, but this other one runs win
98, both connections use dial up connection.
on the laptop running win 98, after I connect the dial up connection, I am
able to connect the vpn session, but when trying the remote desktop
connection I get an error 'server timed out, try again', same error if try
using terminal server.
somebody can help please?

doesn't have firewall, does it?

No, I meant that if you had installed an independent firewall like Zone
Alarm, try disabling it when you try to connect. The reason for saying this
is that we had similar problems - the link to the ISP would be set up but
not the VPN site. Once the VPN information was entered as a trusted site
into the firewall, it worked.

No, I meant that if you had installed an independent firewall like Zone
Alarm, try disabling it when you try to connect. The reason for saying this
is that we had similar problems - the link to the ISP would be set up but
not the VPN site. Once the VPN information was entered as a trusted site
into the firewall, it worked.

Assuming no firewall, you may like to check/confirm the following:-
I assume you are using the same ISP for both laptops as some ISP's do not
permit "VPN Tunnelling"?
On the 98 laptop, go to Control Panel\Network\Configuration. There should be
a number of entries for VPN support. In particular, the dial-up adapter
should have at least two entries, at least one of them having "VPN Support"
in brackets. There should also be an entry for "Microsoft Virtual Private
Networking Adapter. If you don't have this let us know and we can guide you
through the installation.( If you do have it, we can also confirm the
properties on each entry)

Secondly go to My Computer\ Dial-up Networking. There should be at least
three entries. First one to set up a new adapter, second the existing
dial-up into your ISP and thirdly the connection to your VPN. When you click
properties, the last two should not have identical information as the VPN
username/password is for the destination network, ONCE THE CONNECTION HAS
BEEN ESTABLISHED to the ISP.

Of course, you can cross check the info with the XP one, but some of it is
in different places and not having XP I can't confirm this.

no firewall installed. The ISP's are not the same, but it musn't be the
problem because I can do it with the xp laptop using the same dial up
connection.
