Windows 98 does not have the "Restore Point" function of newer
versions of Windows. As for your files - Have you looked in the
recycle Bin? If they are not there you bay want to try a file recovery
utility like "Restoration" ;
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html
This can recover RECENTLY deleted files and may give you a second chance.

Correct

for best possible results turn the computer off at once...

even the process of installing a data recovery program could over-write
those deleted files.

For best possible results install the data recovery software on another
machine...then slave the laptop hard drive to it

A laptop to IDE adapter will only cost a few dollars

As indicated, do not use the computer you are trying to recover EXCEPT
for/during the recovery...

Use one of the LIVE CDs available if you don't have a convenient second
computer OR are unfamiliar with the internals of a computer.
Try Hiren's, Knoppix, or one of the others designed for recovery. Just
*don't download* it to the computer you're trying to recover.
Example:
http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12032

OR use a floppy based tool, which are readily located using a search
engine.
EXAMPLES:
active@uneraser - http://www.uneraser.com/
http://www.smartcode.com/db/search.p...te+dvr+ms+file
http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/

Yep...excellent advice:
any recovery tool that runs from a cd or floppy is good as it won't
over-write the data...

and considerably less trouble than slaving the drive to an other machine

Win98 does not include System Restore (nor would it bring your missing files
back if it was available).
