Note - Symantec's writeup for the Intelligent Updater does not
mention that it works for NAV 2002, but it does.

Hello:

Thanks for the info, including the warning about NAV 2003 being bloated.

I think that your line above explains why I became confused.

As a note, new copies of Norton AV 2002 can be had very inexpensively on
eBay. There also may be some copies of NAV 2003 for sale there.

Cheers,
Jerry

NOTE and remember: These older products will, in no way, protect you
from polymorphic activities, new exploit methods, nor the other
distribution methods now being used. At best, they may provide a user
with "after the fact" discovery and potential removal. At worst, they
may only provide a false sense of protection.

I see three offers on ebay.com for Norton AV 2002 ($3, $9, and $25).
They all state that you get only the CD - no box or manual.

If you think that buying software on ebay is one way to own software in
a legit or legal way, you should understand that just posessing a CD
(even a real CD and not a copy) does not mean that the license to
actually install and use the software has been transfered correctly to
you.

In the case of these NAV 2002 CD's, since no box or any paper
documentation / manuals are supplied, then it's not clear if or how the
actual license is being transfered to the purchaser. In addition,
because NAV 2002 doesn't require any actual license-key authentication,
it's highly likely or possible that the seller's have made their own
copies of the CD's for their own use, and selling you the actual CD
could simply mean that they will continue to use the product at the same
time as you.

When it comes to software that is no longer available for sale by the
original company that wrote it, it makes little sense to seek to
purchase that software through third-parties (such as e-bay) when the
software is available via download, torrent, file-sharing, etc. It
makes even less sense when the software is no longer covered under any
form of extended or legacy support by the original company.

Symantec has something called the Intelligent Updater package. It's a

2002. Note - Symantec's writeup for the Intelligent Updater does not
mention that it works for NAV 2002, but it does.

The link for the Intelligent Updater package is this:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...ymcdefsi32.exe

You might want to put that on your desktop as a handy link (assuming you
download and install NAV 2002 as described below).

Just as a try-out on my 98SE box, I did the NAV (NSW) 2002 install.
Then I d/l-ed that huge file in the FTP link above ("SARC Intelligent
Updater"). It refused to run, saying "This package is not signed with
a valid Symantec signature. This Intelligent Updater package cannot
continue installing."

Checking the .exe file's properties showed a seemingly valid Symantec
signature, but I'm no certificate expert.

The updater download included a number of def files, but a quick
glance through the NAV .ini file suggested that different
platforms/versions used different subsets of these. Also, I looked in
the NAV/NSW installed stuff for *any* def files to replace manually
but didn't find any.

Did you not face this problem?

The win-98 system that I'm typing this message on did not currently have
NAV 2002 installed on it.

I installed NSW 2002 about 15 minutes ago. I then clicked on the link
to SARC intelligent updater and downloaded the file. I ran the file,
and did not get the error message you posted above.

After a few minutes of file unpacking and various file operations, I got
this message:

--------------
SARC intelligent updater

A Symantec product containing virus protection was found and was
updated. This product uses the latest engine and virus defination
system available. However, if you have other older Symantec products,
in addition to those detected, you must run Intelligent Updater version
2 to update their virus protection.
--------------

NAV 2002 is now reporting:

Virus Definitions: 5/12/10
Subscription Service: 5/14/11

The updater download included a number of def files, but a
quick glance through the NAV .ini file suggested that different
platforms/versions used different subsets of these. Also, I

No. Try downloading that file again. Make sure you use this exact
link:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...ymcdefsi32.exe

The file name you should end up with is symcdefsi32.exe.

If you download it today, it might be the exact same as what I got:

File size: 81,001,288 bytes

Digital signature signing time:
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 5:55:15 AM

Also, open the NSW 2002 application. Click "Help" on the top far-right
side. The General tab should say:

Norton SystemWorks 5.04

And further down:

Norton SystemWorks
Version 2002.05 Build 82
Part number 07-25-00684

Under the Norton Antivirus tab:

Norton Antivirus
Version 8.07.17c

Subscription SKU: 07-12-00656
Part Number 07-25-00597

Under System Info tab:

Operating system Windows 98 4.10.2222 A

Yep, just used it again - 80MB download ....

Same size etc etc, shows time as 17:55:15 - time zone difference I
assume.

All those are the same as yours.

When I ran symcdefsi32.exe this time, same result as before. Ran it
from the desktop. No idea where it unpacked to. I'm puzzled.
