Default Where's my CD drive????

Without any warning or provocation, my CD-ROM drive has vanished from my
computer. It isn't showing up under MY COMPUTER, when I try to open CD PLAYER
I get a message saying I don't have a CD drive. I tried the ADD HARDWARE, but
I don't see CD drive asan option. HELP!!!!!!!!

Have you made any changes to the computer, either hardware or software?

Right-click "My Computer", click Properties on the menu that appears, then click the
Performance tab. Does it say 'configured for optimal performance', or does it say
that some drives are in 'MS-DOS compatibility mode'?
Click the Device Manager tab...is there a CDROM category there, and is your CD drive
listed under that category? Under the Hard Disk Controllers category, are any of
the items there shown with a red X or a yellow exclamation mark on them?

The disappearance of the CD drive is a common indicator
of an invalid entry or two or three in Device Manager.

Follow Glen's advice, but check ALL of the entries.
Look for things like duplicate CD-ROMS, duplicate Monitors, etc...

Aside from Glen and Hugh, if you use Direct CD you may need to =
reinstall it. I have seen where it becomes corrupt which causes the CD =
drives to vanish.

.....and this should be done in Safe Mode, so that all the duplicates are visible.
