Hello,
I need help trying to boot from the CD-ROM because the CD driver is gone. Anyhow have any instructions on how to do this? Someone said I had to modify my Bios settings. I am still not sure. Please help. Thanks. |

When the monitor displays your BIOS details, the next line says which key interrupts the boot process so you can adjust BIOS settings. The boot disk process should be set to search A: first CD last and (optionally) CD next after A. You will probably find the various alternatives rotate round in a loop when you key Page Down. On screen prompts tell you which key to exit and save (probably ESC.) Not all PCs enable booting from the CD: and your CD has to have the appropriate code. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

I am unsure on how to get to the BIOS settings. How do you get there?

Boot from CD-ROM
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q237948
Troubleshoot CD-R_W http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=218617 Troubleshoot CD-ROM or DVD-ROM I guess, a first try would be... (1) Boot to Safe Mode. (Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.) (2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab". (3) Open the CD-ROM branch, by clicking it's plus sign. (4) Highlight each drive in that branch, & click "Remove". (Safe Mode may reveal the presence of a "ghost".) (5) Close up, & boot to Normal Mode. Hopefully Windows will find the correct drivers, & all will be well. As cquirke once said, "Control Panel, System, Performance tab". Are you in "compatibility" mode? Then, try his site... http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/doscompat.htm Also... http://support.microsoft.com/default...79&Product=w98 Troubleshooting MS-DOS Compatibility Mode on Hard Disks (130179) - The Performance tab in System properties shows that one or more of the hard disks in your computer is using MS-DOS Compatibility mode. MS-DOS compatibility mode may be in use either for the file system or for virtual memory. You may receive the... Also... To see whether the CD-ROM is physically functioning, it can be run independently of Windows... Get a Startup Diskette from http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Test the Startup Diskette. Boot it, put in a CD and "DIR" the CD. It will say which letter is the CD. (Otherwise, it is likely one letter higher than normal.) That is, "DIR X:", where "X:" is the CD-ROM letter. If you cannot boot the Startup Diskette, you must be sent into BIOS. If the CD-ROM does work in DOS after the Diskette has boot, it is likely there is a problem with the Windows 32-bit drivers or settings. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Ryan" wrote in message ... | Hello, | | I need help trying to boot from the CD-ROM because the CD driver is gone. | Anyhow have any instructions on how to do this? Boot from CD-ROM
Ryan, When booting look for a message telling you which key to use to enter Setup or the BIOS. This is usually the F1 or del. key. That takes you into the BIOS (Setup). The enter key usually opens a section and the esc key takes you back. Navigate with the arrow keys. What you want is the Boot sequence. The page up or page down keys change the options. Instructions are usually at the bottom of the screen. You need to change the boot order to have the CD first in the sequence in order for it to boot. ie; CDRom --A:-- C: (or HDD0) Use the esc key to back out and get to the exit options. If you are satisfied with the changes select Save and Exit, otherwise Exit without Saving. If you don't see the key to use to enter Setup try F1 or del. If they don't work and you don't see the key to use because the logo covers it up then use the Tab or Esc key as soon as you see the logo to bypass it. If you need to access the CDrom when booting to Dos then post back for a line to enter in your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Bill,
I tried using that first method and it did not work. How do I access through MS Dos with that autoexec.bat and config.sys files? Thanks, Ryan "Bill Watt" wrote in message ... Boot from CD-ROM
Ryan, Enter this line in Autoexec.bat: C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 Enter this line in Config.sys: DEVICE=C:\windows\command\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001 Boot to Command Prompt Only To get into Windows Safe Mode with CDrom support enter: Win.com /d:m This works for most CDroms but not all. It supports both of mine, a DVD and a CDRW.
