Default New AdAware (free)

Hi Gary:

That you for pointing this out to me.

I was naively assuming that def files for Ad-Aware SE would continue to run
on Win 9x/ME systems. As you say, it doesn't make sense to change the def
file to drop Win 9x/ME support, when the only purpose of continuing to use
Ad-Aware Se is to run on these older systems. Most users with Win 2000, XP,
and Vista PCs have moved to the newer Ad-Aware 2007/2008 versions of
Ad-Aware.

I'm sorry if I caused any confusion by suggesting that the Ad-Aware SE
updates would continue to run on Win 9x/ME.

Cheers,
O.J.

That's nice, and would be extremely useful but for the fact that for many
folks, and starting only within the last few weeks, the downloaded DEFs
aren't working in '9x systems. And, in fact, if you read the DEF file
itself, it no longer includes Win9x versions in its list of applicability,
though none of it makes much sense, really. Why bother to continue
supporting AdAware SE with updates for some OSes, including NT4, and not
all OSes that can run SE?

Anyway, this is from the thread immediately previous to this one,
"Ad-Aware" (thanks to philo for finding the info):

Hello:

Ad-Aware 1.06r definitions can still be downloaded manually from the
Lavasoft web page:
http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ or click on:
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip .)

Look in the upper right hand corner and clock the link for Ad-Aware SE
and download it
directly into the main program install folder for Ad-Aware SE and unzip
it.

There was also a batch file utility that was written to help streamline
this process.

See the post below by David H. Lipman:
(Note that download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip should be
changed
to: http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip .)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest Ad-aware definitions are at the URL;
http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuit...ublic/defs.zip
You can then download; wget.exe http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget/
and; unzip.exe - http://patriot.net/~bmcgin/unzip.exe

Place; unzip.exe, wget.exe and the DLL files in the Windows directory
[ %windir%; c:\windows ]

Then you can use a batch file such as...

Update.BAT
------------------
@echo off
wget -N http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuit...ublic/defs.zip
copy defs.ref defs.bak
unzip -j -o defs.zip

Save the BAT file in the folder where Ad-Aware.exe is located and then
create a link
(LNK) file on the DeskTop that points to the BAT file for a manual
update.

You could also create a scheduled MS Tasker JOB to use the BAT file to
perform an
automated periodic update.

Fact is, I don't know for sure what's going on, or even that the new DEFs
won't run on ANY 9x system. I don't know that the DEFs file for Win9x is
different than for NT-based systems. Just haven't heard any reports of
success on 9x since the topic came up, and that link is the first indication
by anyone "official" that something may indeed have been changed.

Hi Again Gary:

I just read in the Win ME general forum that Ad-Aware SE users have been
experiencing the same problem of the latest def files not working with Win
ME, and appearing to act as if corrupt on Win ME systems. But the latest SE
defs *do* work, as you said, on my Win XP Home system.

For what it's worth ....

Cheers,

Gary,

I was wondering what I have to do to uninstall the AdAware. Do I just go to
the Add/Remove to uninstall? Or do I do something else. I don't want to mess

Default New AdAware (free)

Just go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall. If you want to set up a Clean
Boot like I do (and otherwise clean up in preparation -- see my site), your
chances of problems go down. Just remember the caveat regarding Uninstalling
apps -- you want to reinstate the normal startup in MSCONFIG and NOT restart
before doing the uninstall.

Gary,

I was wondering what I have to do to uninstall the AdAware. Do I just go
to
the Add/Remove to uninstall? Or do I do something else. I don't want to
mess
up.

It's the same as the 3rd one down on this webpage too, and says it's
supplied by Lavasoft, and has 20,000 downloads last week.

Well I haven't tried it anyway and I'm sure you've already been there done
that though.
