Default Windows ME corrupt?

Someone told me that my Windows ME may be corrupt due to
symptoms:system restore won't work, won't defrag or run
scan disk, won't let me install new programs/downloads,
other errors (can't remember then all). I do not have the
disk, as it came loaded on my computer. How can I get a
disk to re=install this? Or should I upgrade to XP, and
how do I go about this? Thanks!

Details, details and details. All three are essential prerequisites to
resolving your problems.

When did you last carry out basic system maintenance? Update your antivirus
application? Check for viruses and other malware? Use system restore?
Scandisk? Defrag? Install a program? Install a security patch?

With some basic information people here should be able to help you. However
if you feel that you do need to reinstall Win Me, CD or not, your PC supplier
should have provided you with the means to restore your system to the state it
was in when first delivered.

Upgrade to XP. This has to be your choice but remember that whatever system
you run it still needs to be maintained and the very same problems might occur
so why not as a first step try fixing your current problems.

It has been a long time since I have been able to run
defrag, system restore, scan disk. I have AVG virus
detection and run it every 3 days. Update every week.I
have a few adware type detectors. I can not install
windows updates, or security patches. They download, but
will not install. I also cannot search from the "start"
bar.
I have a restore CD, but did not want to remove all of my
other info, by using it. Thanks

It has been a long time ...

Why did you leave it so long before seeking help? In doing so you have
probably made things far worse for yourself since it is better to try and
resolve each problem as it arises rather than ending up with a whole bunch of
problems.

You need to have your AV application running in the background at all times,
especially so when on line. I would also strongly advise you to check for
updated viral reference signatures daily. Weekly can simply be far too long
an interval in thee times of rapidly mutating viruses.

Your "adware detectors" are only as good as when you last updated their
reference files.

What downloads are you trying to install from the Windows Update site? What
are the errors? You can check these for yourself by looking at the file
iuhist.xml in the Program Files\Windows Update\V4 folder and the file Windows
Update.log in your Windows folder.

You say you cannot Search. What exactly happens? Can you search your hard
disk using Windows Explorer?
