"Mike M" wrote in message ... You just don't get it do you! Your seeming ignorance says volumes for the American education system.. -- Mike Maltby No, I don't get it. I'm asking you to explain it. Why does the BBC refer to the UK if they mean England? How long has this UK been around? I was in school roughly 15 years ago. Back then the USSR was still around. I meant no offense referring to your little country. I guess the British are easily offended. There are many little towns in our country which surely consider themselves every bit as significant as the big towns. I hope our education system is better than it used to be. That "No Child Left Behind" stuff is supposed to help make sure kids today are actually learning what they're supposed to be. I remember in my high school geography class they handed out blank maps of the world and half the kids couldn't even properly label the USA much less the UK. |

It isn't any different really than the educational system here or in
Jamaica, for instance. The day education 'ended' was the day they took away the right to physically discipline a student!!! End of story!! In Jamaica (as in parts of the US, I understand) they don't teach English as we know it......they teach 'ebonics' in order to be politically correct. Hogwash!! So what happens to these students who can only spell "yo wassup" (maybe) when they hit the working world where proper English is spoken?? Ron's Aunt in Jamaica was a school teacher and absolutely horrified when this started a long time ago. I am p*ssed at these mouthy kids who know an adult cannot belt them upside the head and get away literally with murder. NO....education is on a downhill slide and I can't see any way of stopping the slide. It was way better in the good ole days when we got smacked for misbehaving. And we knew we would get worse when we got home if the teacher called our parents. Kept us in line, I will tell you!! Old School. "Heirloom" wrote in message ... Actually, Mike, we have a pretty good educational system. I admit that there are areas that need attention ( I feel ), however, any student is capable of getting as much out of it as they are willing to put in. The real problem stems from many schools and classes being 'dumbed down' to accommodate those that are incapable or unwilling to perform. Fortunately, all schools are not like that. The mere fact that there are so many foriegn students (doing exceptionally well, I might add) is a testament to the "system" still being, as a whole, quite good. Higher education remains quality, it is the early schooling that severely needs revamped controls. Heirloom, old and got out before it started going down "Mike M" wrote in message ... If American news says something where news happened, they normally refer to the state unless it involves many states. I often watch some of the BBC news in the morning and they say stuff is happening in the UK when they usually mean England. If there was a main state in the US, it wouldn't be California. If anything it should be Texas since it's the largest state of the 48 connected states, and much more populated than Alaska, and it's right in the middle. As for comparing land area, that is just one measure and pretty meaningless. More meaningful would be to compare population, GNP and the like. Whilst the UK is 1/40th of the area of the US its population is roughly 1/5 that of the US due to the population density being so much higher and the UK not having large barren areas such as Alaska. -- Mike Maltby Stuffing more people or a bigger engine in a tiny car doesn't make it any bigger than the monster truck. Excellent! And a KLR650? Without looking it up, that sounds like an update
of the Kwacker I hired on Crete a decade ago (lotta fun!)? I'd like to see that workshop. If I ever get over there... Shane Heirloom wrote: Actually, Shane, I now have four bikes. Expecting the delivery of a brand new engine tomorrow for one I am rebuilding. It was becoming cost prohibitive for the parts I needed for the old engine, so, I will be putting a 2006 engine in an old '85 bike. This one is for my wife to learn on......she has a 2006 model of the same bike waiting for her to learn to ride. (both are CMX250 Honda Rebels). I added a KLR650 dual sport to my rides.....still have the VTX1800R. I have converted my woodworking shop into a bike shop.....the centerpiece being my new lift, 1500 lb. capacity, pneumatic/hydraulic with front and side extensions, drop tail, mtce. center jack, front wheel clamp and removeable plate for the rear wheel removal. Sigh......and you actually get ticked off if we Canadians tell Americans they know dick all about Canada?? I have both a WalMart (ptui) and a few Radio Shacks (now called "the Source") within a 10 minute drive from my home in the outer boonies of Toronto. Also have a lot of Best Buys too. Now that's funny, Figgs. I don't mean 'funny ha-ha'. Because while I admit
there's a difficulty, I say that hitting kids teaches them that violence is a solution. That its alright to lose one's temper and give up trying to reason. I say this because that's what I believe it taught me. Not that I've hit anyone other than in self-defence (or playing Rugger) since I was about 13 or 14, but it has been hard not to and I've been aware at the time - because I look for that sort of thing - of learnt behaviour coming to the surface. And I wasn't abused as a child in any way whatsoever, just hit when I was 'naughty'. otoh violence *is* a solution. Just not in the home. And it shouldn't be in the international arena. But on the street, yes absolutely. Though you have to be the real thing, since bravado only works with poseurs. You know, like the way there's only a thin line seperating the cops from the robbers, which is hopefully the existence of honour - but there is almost never a cop when you need one, its physically impossible. So either you stay at home the rest of your life - or you protect yourself. Shane Heather wrote: It isn't any different really than the educational system here or in Jamaica, for instance. "Heather" wrote in message ... It isn't any different really than the educational system here or in Jamaica, for instance. The day education 'ended' was the day they took away the right to physically discipline a student!!! End of story!! Physical discipline worked well for most back in the day. When I was in elementary school they would make you put your head down on the desk or stand against a wall for a first offense. On repeated offenses, the principal got out the paddle and tanned your backside. This worked for most, though there were still kids who would test it a bit further. No one ever died from the discipline. In Jamaica (as in parts of the US, I understand) they don't teach English as we know it......they teach 'ebonics' in order to be politically correct. Hogwash!! So what happens to these students who can only spell "yo wassup" (maybe) when they hit the working world where proper English is spoken?? Jamaicans don't go in the "working world where proper English is spoken". They mostly work with tourists who expect slang speech. Ron's Aunt in Jamaica was a school teacher and absolutely horrified when this started a long time ago. I am p*ssed at these mouthy kids who know an adult cannot belt them upside the head and get away literally with murder. Kids in general get worse every year. Partly it's because they're spoiled. They have more toys than we did. Partly because "acting up" has been declared an official disorder that we try to medicate. We tell them it's simply not their fault they misbehave. NO....education is on a downhill slide and I can't see any way of stopping the slide. It was way better in the good ole days when we got smacked for misbehaving. And we knew we would get worse when we got home if the teacher called our parents. Kept us in line, I will tell you!! Most parents stopped caring. They expect the teachers to control their kids without having the methods they had when we were kids. As was pointed out in a recent episode of the TV show Boston Legal, there is a great need for teachers because who wants to be a teacher when teachers are expected to make sure kids actually learn, and teachers now have to be parents but aren't allowed to physically discipline, and teachers have to see to the students with special medical needs or slow learning ability who get mixed in with the other kids? |

And I don't mean a holiday in the West Indies either. Heather That is part of the point too. Americans don't travel outside our borders nearly as much because our country is bigger than most. We have everything we need here. I am pretty far from any border, so travelling across one gets expensive. I can't afford a vacation outside of the country, and haven't needed to go there for business. |
