I can't find that KB article, when I search it says the number is not valid.
However, could you give us more detail on your sound setup. Do you have a separate sound card or are you using on onboard version? Does the PC beep from its case speaker when it powers up? Are you using external speakers plugged into the output sockets? Are the speakers powered? Has the sound gone on everything, i.e no sound when you play a CD or when you use Media Player to play web music? What software are you using to "play" sound? Try this article:- http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;812394 If you are using Media Player, try this site:-http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html Alan "Alpha24" wrote in message ... Where can I obtain the advice I obviously need.please.? We cannot help unless we know details e.g. what sound card and software you use. Your first task is to identify whether the fault is hardware (e.g. speakers) or software. Sound-on-board (built into the motherboard) can fail, as I spent some days discovering in April. If you need new hardware it will probably require new software. Your choice will then be whether 16-bit or 24-bit sound suits your needs best. In the mean time, get PCSPEAK.EXE from the MS web site in case you can enable any speaker built into your PC. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Have you tried your speakers on a different computer or different speakers
on yours? When you say all sound, are you including the warning sounds as well as those made with Media Player or a CD? Does the sound volume icon show in the systray?
What shows as your Preferred Device in Control Panel Multimedia Audio tab? Are any devices showing conflicts or as Unknown/Other in Device Manager? I have onboard sound. i have checked the speakers and they're OK. What "new software" might I need ? I'll have a look at PCSpeaker.exe --- could that be a solution to the problem? Regards, Alpha. |

Loss of all sound in WIN 98 SE.

I have lost all sound and have been trying for weeks to restore it. Checklist: 1) Do speakers work? Pull out the plug from the PC's sound socket, and tap the tip. If it doesn't go bzzt bzzt, turn up the volume. If still no bzz, suspect bad speakers, amp or (most likely) speaker lead. 2) Correct "speaker" socket on the PC? A common mistake is to plug speakers into the Speaker socket of an internal modem, instead of the "real" sound device. When that happens, you will get sound, but only modem sound! 3) Are device drivers in effect? This is the usual non-trivial issue, and it can be a pain - for some reason, Win9x was rather prone to losing sound drivers and/or "visibility" of the sound card. If you can't see a (Win98) yellow speaker in the System Tray, this is most likely what is wrong, and the next step is Device Manager to look for a "!" 4) Testing Windows sound Do a Find for .WAV, .MID and (for laffs) .MP3 and try playing those. The .WAV and .MP3 use the digitised sound component of the sound card; the .MID uses the synthesizer, and you'd also be testing the Windows file association for these file types. Then, try an audio CD - if that's the only thing that fails, look for a missing audio lead from CD drive to sound card, or one that has the wrong pin-out (they aren't all the same). Modern PCs don't need this pure sound cable anymore, but Win98-era kit did. If any of the above don't work, then look for that sound mixer to see if the relevant channel (MIDI, CD or Wave) is muted, panned hard to one side, or turned down, and fix accordingly. Finally, try a few DirectX games to see if that works. If that's the only thing that fails, then you may need newer sound card drivers, or (if only one game affected) a visit to the game's site for an FAQ. 5) Testing sound from DOS mode Modern sound cards almost certainly won't work in pure DOS mode, but Win98-era ones may. Get out of Windows completely, e.g. boot to DOS mode (Command Prompt Only) from the F8 boot menu, and then try some DOS games from there. Start with simple ones that don'e have sound card setup, such as those using FM syntheses, or Wolfenstein and older that just detect "Sound Blaster" and work. After that, try games requiring sound setup, such as Doom, ROTT, Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider etc. Oddly, Quake is an auto-detecter! If DOS games make sound but Windows doesn't, then the hardware's OK but the Windows sound device drivers are not - or Control Panel, Multimedia may show some other "sound" device is selected instead of the sound card (such as that internal modem!) -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - Tip Of The Day: To disable the 'Tip of the Day' feature... -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |

Have you run the DirectX diagnostics and what are the results?
If you are using onboard sound, have you checked your BIOS to see if it is still active? Also my understanding is that with onboard sound, the M/B supplier will supply software on a CD with the board to be loaded at install. You could try reloading that sound part of the package or checking the M/B website for the latest version. Alan "Alpha24" wrote in message ... Thanks Alan. I have onboard sound.
