I don't know the reason, but you should use a bootable floppy or CD to be
able to install a new copy of your OS.

ALl of a sudden I am getting this message--no idea what happened! The
computer locked while using, when it was rebooted this is all you get on a
black screen. Already ran Scandisk--no problems found and did Sys C:, no
difference!

HELP!! What happened??

I already tried fixing the problem using my windows start up floppy using SYS
C--this didn't help. There is a command for "EXT" for extracting files from
the CAB on my Windows 98 CD, ut I have no idea if this would help or what
file commands I should put in, do I have to rebuild the entire drive? I hope
not.

Also, I put in my Windows disk alone and it of course brings me to the
windows install/setup screen and says there already is an OS on the computer
and if i continue the config.sys and autoexec.bat files will be replaced.
Should I do that? Will I lose everything on my hard drive?

Why did the system freeze in the first place? If you have a disk problem,
then attempting to reinstall Windows will fail and may damage any
recoverable data on the disk. You shouldn't do anything until you know what
the problem is.

If you have run Scandisk and there were no errors reported, then that
indicates the file system is valid, but it tells you nothing about the boot
files. Can you boot to a startup floppy and execute simple commands like
DIR C: or DIR C:\Windows? Do you get a response that seems to indicate that
all the files are there and are accessible?

Do FDISK /Status to see a report of the disk partitioning.
