'Windows Update Setup Files' missing.

I clean-installed Windows ME on an 18.6 GB hard drive and am missing the
Windows Update Setup Files, why?
Will running setup again fix it, or what other options do I have to retrieve
those files?
Windows Update is in my startup menu and I was able to run Windows Update
completely.
Does 'HXFSETUP' have anything to do with it?
When I tried to open this folder, I was told:
'Driver Installation Failed. Could not find the device for this driver.'
What went wrong and is there a way to fix it?

That is for your Conexant modem . It has nothing to do with Windows
Update. Why do you state your missing the Windows Update Setup Files
when you can successfully go to Windows Update ? Are you directed
to the V4 or V5 site ?
Go the the WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder and look for
Update Class. This is required for the V4 site. The other 2 files
required for the V4 site are in the WINDOWS\System folder and are
iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll. If you have all 3 you're good to go as
far as WU is concerned.
IF you find WUWebControlClass than you're being directed to the V5
site. Wuweb.dll will be present in the WINDOWS\System folder if this
is the case.

My Conexant Modem has long been removed and the only way it could be
remembered, would be through the motherboard, is that possible? After all, I
have an entirely new hard drive, with no previous information on it.
I found the Update Class file, but not the other two, iuctl.dll and
iuengine.dll. Aren't they supposed to be in the System folder of Windows? Or
would they be hiding somewhere else?
Maybe it's better to start all over again
If one wanted to partition, it should be done before loading Windows anyway.
When I checked FDISK, I discovered that the disk was already DOS partitioned
to FAT 32 as a whole. Could the person who fixed my computer and replaced my
two previous drives with the current one have done it?
The problems seem to be endless.
Hopefully I can find all the answers I am looking for.

What ME cd do you have? Does it say Microsoft on it and have a hologram?

If the ME disc you have is an OEM one it could explain your having one large
C: (though the person who installed it might easily have done it that way
assuming it's what you wanted).

It might also explain why you should have a Conexant driver present (btw it
isn't the modem at the root of this message but the modem driver - thus an
OEM disc for a system using a Conexant modem would pre-install the drivers
for it. If your Internet Explorer were pre-configured to use that modem and
it doesn't appear to exist......?).

Anyway, to partitioning.....or back to partitioning.

If ME is already installed - to an HD partitioned as a single large C:
drive - then you can only partition further (using FDISK) by deleting ME and
then re-installing to the new, smaller, C.

However, if what you have is an OEM recovery or restore cd, reinstalling
with it will promptly re-partition your drive back into one large C.

To change the partition arrangement without destroying your current
installation requires 3rd party partitioning software, eg Partition
Magic/BootItNG (you can get a free trial of BootItNG - BING - but it's a
rather more complicated program to use than PM). Or some kind soul could
send you the floppy images for the Partition Magic rescue disks, which is
actually all you need to do the job, given it would be done from DOS anyway.

I have an Upgrade to Windows 98 SE. When I loaded Windows, I should have
started with the W98SE CD.
For some reason I was able to get started with my Upgrade CD. Hence the
message at bootup in the black screen: "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
Failure....."
Is there a way to get rid of this paticular line and can I in any way get
those two missing items back?
In order to be able to partition without loosing what I now have, I will
have to get Partition Magic or the like.
The way it looks, the file with reference to my former conexant modem has
disappeared somehow.
I just finished using your Windows Security Upgrade CD
successfully and am in fairly good shape again right now.

That's not a problem, it's a bios setting (Boot Device) and just means it
didn't find a boot record on the cd-rom. To get rid of it you'd set HDD-0
before CD-ROM in the BIOS, but I don't see much point. It's only a problem
if you have an infected bootable CD in the drive at boot time.

That shouldn't be a problem. Open Internet Explorer, once it's fully loaded
click Tools | Windows Update, and it should take you there. Then the latest
Update files should be installed. But if that doesn't work, these are the
instructions from WU support for installing them manually:

to. When you clean install any version of Windows, you *uninstall* it by
formatting C.

If you want the option to return to Win 98se you'll have to install it

install your programs before ME. Otherwise they'll need to be re-installed
on returning to 98se. The net difference would be the waste of hd space the
uninstall files represent.

My advice is clean install ME and if you decide you want 98se instead,
format C: then clean install 98se.
