What is "proxy desktop"?
What is this and how do I get rid of it. It poppoed up a couple of
days ago when II tried to shutdown. "Proxy desktop is not responding, wait. end tasck, cancle" etc. Nothing I do will get rid of it. I have to turn ther power off to shutdown. I've tried going throught close programs and closing it down. Any help appreciated. Are you running WinMe or XP?
Also, do you have Zone Alarm installed? Mart "vzlion" wrote in message ... What is this and how do I get rid of it. It poppoed up a couple of days ago when II tried to shutdown. Sorry, I should have said I was running ME. And no, I'm not running
Zone Alarm, or anything similar. Walt On Sun, 15 Aug 2004 19:46:25 +0100, "Mart" wrote: Are you running WinMe or XP? Also, do you have Zone Alarm installed? Mart "vzlion" wrote in message .. . OK Walt, thanks for your reply, - it's just that I've had a similar problem
on an XP machine and found that by un-installing ZA (long story!) I resolved the issue. But I never found out WHY it was behaving this way, nor what MS utility was actually 'generating' the Proxy Desktop report. I've subsequently re-installed ZA and things are now behaving normally and I've never had the 'Proxy Desktop' report again. However, just as an aside, I would be interested if you would try the following and come back with your results: - Did you notice that Windows Explorer wouldn't open just before the 'Proxy Desktop...' report pops up, and/or you were trying to close Windows? Next time the report appears, let the progress bar continue until the 'cancel' option appears and then cancel it (don't 'end task' it) then look in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) under Processes tab for more than one occurrence of explorer.exe. If so, 'End Process' on all but one occurrence, then see if you can (re-)open Windows Explorer - and/or you can close Windows 'normally' I don't know what the 'cause' is but would be interested to know whether it also happens in WinMe. I do know that it also happens in Windows 2000 (XP & Win2K are NT based OS's) - again, with no 'satisfactory' technical solution that I'm aware of. There's no mention of 'Proxy Desktop' in the MS Knowledge Base. Your help would be appreciated. Mart "vzlion" wrote in message ... Sorry, I should have said I was running ME. Mart
Before I had a chance to try your suggestion I tried something else. I ran a registry search and found it in the registry. It was under HKEY_USERS/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Explorer Bar/{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}/FILENAMEMRU/ I did a repair on IE and it seems to have taken care of it. So far so good. I did however, keep you reply for further reference. Thanks. Thanks for the feedback Walt.
The reason you found it in the registry was probably due to you previously doing a search for it - MRU = Most Recently Used - often appear associated with search lists. However, more likely fixed by repairing IE. (Not something I could do in my copy of XP g) And certainly worth noting!! Thanks for taking time to reply - it's appreciated Mart "vzlion" wrote in message ... Mart Before I had a chance to try your suggestion I tried something else.
