changing desktops

Hi again
My O/S is win98se, pentium 2 355mz,195memory,10gb
Hdrive....When I am using my pc for some reason it seems
to change desktop after a small window appears saying
explorer error and when I press cancel on this it seems to
go to a slightly different desktop ie the bottom task bar
has only my firewall and anti virus icon there and yet
before there would be those two plus a memory accelorator
and volume control etc.....when I try to get say the
accelorator to work by double clicking the icon on the
desktop it says it is already running in the background!
Please can some one help as I dont know what I have done
wrong and also if I am using more resources than I
should ....also anything I am running ie a p2p client
crashes ...please what is going on ????

If you mean most of the icons in the System Tray (the part of the Taskbar where the
clock lives) disappear after you close the Explorer error, that is because
Explorer.exe has crashed....that is what the error is telling you. When the
Explorer shell crashes, it usually immediately restarts, but the icons that were
visible in the Tray disappear....even though the programs are still running, as you
found out.

First thing, get rid of the "memory accelerator"....uninstall it. All those memory
enhancing utilities are junk, and may well be the cause of the Explorer error.

Then, check your system for malware that may be responsible:

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for
Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and
remove what it finds.
