There is a free trial, I think. It says USB 2 is required but of course USB
1 works, just slower.

Thanks John for your advice, my kids are urging me to scrap the ME and
Pavilion PC in favour of an Imac...is this a "four letter" word in this
community or have the kids got the right idea and not throw away money in
trying to upgrade an old machine?

We like our iMac in this household.

You could simply upgrade ME to XP and get full use of the iPod and your
computer would have a new lease on life. I've upgraded 98SE and ME to XP
and I'm glad I did. Back in 2001 I was clinging to Windows for Workgroups
3.11 and I ended up happier after upgrading to Windows 95, until that old
computer broke down and I ended up with ME.

Thanks for that, my PC is now "getting on" in PC terms, its nearly 9 years
old and I was thinking about replacing it anyway. The argument is PV versus
Apple has reared its head im my house and one son is a graphic designer and
my neighbour has an apple, both have tried for years to get me to change to
apple and I have stoutly defended Microsoft. BUT, now I have the oportunity
to upgrade do I update a old machine or do I try something new. Imac seems to
be a good deal at the moment approx £649 as against £1200 for a HP Pavilion.
I wonder if I could fly to New York and buy an Apple as the £ versus the $ is
very favourable at the moment.

£1200 for a HP Pavilion

That's ridiculous. I've nothing against an iMac but I feel you should
compare the cost of broadly comparable machines and at that amount it
would appear you're talking about a top end HP as many excellent PCs can
be bought for half that price if not less.

Personally I wouldn't go with either an iMac or an HP (which IMO are often
grossly overpriced) but might consider an MacBook.

I guess at that age (computer's age) you should get a new computer. No
point in upgrading and having it fail, as happened to me.

What to get, Decisions, decisions.

Have fun!

Before you do anything try the Linux distribution pclinux.

Use the minime version.

Find here http://ftp.belnet.be/linux/pclinuxos...glish/preview/

pclinuxos-p93a-minime.iso . Download the .ISO and simply burn it to a
cd.

For winme I like DeepBurner for burning ISOs.

Then you can reboot your computer with the burned cd in the cd drive
and you will be able to actually
use the operating system without actually installing it.

If you like it install it.

Installing it is easy. Best of all it doesn't cost anything.
