What's the optical mouse's make/model? Is it a PS/2 connections (round,
approx 1/3 inch in diameter.) Or is it a USB mouse? What did you have installed previously? There isn't normally any separate Device Manager entry for PS/2 ports, just the devices (keyboard or mouse) themselves. Furthermore, it isn't necessary to install any special drivers unless you want the extra "cool" goodies that the mouse offers. I suggest you uninstall any programming that you installed, then look in Device Manager and delete whatever mouse is found, then restart and see what happens. You may also need to check BIOS settings and see if there's an option to enable/disable the PS/2 mouse. What it should be depends on what you have. PS/2 or USB? -- Gary S. That "model is MD something" simply isn't sufficient information. Again,
I've yet to see a USB mouse that requires additional drivers in Win98 and up. You say you removed the USB port and reinstalled it. I don't understand why. Let me see if I can restate my suggestions: 1. In Add/Remove Programs, look for a possible entry from the MD Drivers installation. If so, uninstall it. 2. In Device Manager, remove the *mouse*. Nothing in the USB section needs to be removed, only the mouse itself. Then restart and see what happens. -- Gary S. Lita,
"Corrupt OS" is too broad a term to be useful. I'm having a difficult time following the progression of events. Let's see if we can clarify. the history a bit. Please answer these as best you can. I'm assuming that this is a recent development, that you previously had some other mouse attached and that it worked properly. Is that true? Can you re-attach the old mouse and does it functions? (You may have to uninstall the MD support software to test this fully.) Alternatively, can you find another mouse to try, preferably one that uses a PS/2 connector and a roller ball (not Optical)? Or, really, can you use *any* other mouse successfully? In BIOS, do you see any "Legacy USB" settings? If so, try changing that setting from whatever it is now--if it's enabled, disable it, and vice-versa. Try starting up with no mouse attached. What happens (follow any on-screen instructions, like "You may now plug in a mouse" or whatever.) You originally reported that the system "hangs" looking for the PS/2 port--what is the *exact* error report? We need exact wording. When does the error occur--right at the beginning of startup or towards the end, after Windows has pretty much loaded, perhaps as the Desktop is appearing? I'm assuming this "hang" stops all startup progress and you have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del or perform a hard reset *using a reset button on the machine or by turning the system off and then on again. Yet you indicate that with enough persistence, the error goes away and you can get into Windows and use it? Is that right? If so, does the error occur again before you normally shut down, forcing you to again restart, or does it only occur during a restart? I hesitate to make any more guesses as to what the problem is before getting answers to the above, but one of my working ideas is that this particular set of drivers just isn't quite the right one. Thus, knowing the exact make/model of the mouse would help. Where did you get it? Are there any identifying labels on the mouse itself? -- Gary S.
