Default ME start-up problem

On start up computer hangs on "completing updating files,
continuing to load Windows" or goes to safe mode.

From safe mode I do a restore and it loads but same
problem happens again on next start-up. Over a week, I
notice I must go back to an early restore point as the
later restore points don't work.

I know that eventually my early restore point will
disappear. Help! any ideas or things I should check.

Boot to Safe Mode, and look in MSCONFIG at the startup entries - see what's
there.
look here for instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing
unnecessary programs loading
(enter any item in the startup list in MSCONFIG into the search box on the
page, and click Search)
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

for detailed instructions - look here

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Mike,

Make sure you can see all files and folder in Tools Folder Options View.

Search the C:\Windows\inf folder for files called oemXX.inf, where XX are
numbers, of 0 (zero) KB size, and delete them (0 KB only!). They could
literally be thousands.

After that reboot and see if problem is solved.

Cleaned up Startup using your precess below. Excellent!
noted two identical copies of Load Power Profile but no
apparent virus additions.

Ran Stinger which found virus W32/Deborm.worm in 6 of the
C:\restore\archive\files Stinger did not appear to
remove. Downloaded a removal tool from Symantec,
W32.HLLW.Nebiwo which I understood to be Symantec's name
for W32/Deborm.worm. No virus found on removal.

Ignored the instruction to turn off System Restore as I
was afraid to lose my earlier Restore Points needed for
getting beyond Safe Mode.

Initiated a Restart and it worked perfectly. Hope it is
fixed but not sure.

I keep AVG antivirus, Spybot and Adaware updated weekly.
Maybe it was hanging on a startup program that I removed.

Thanks for help.

Mike
