Default "file allocation table bad - file c

Can anyone tell me what the subject means and how to fix
it? Had a crash and loaded the Gateway restoration disk...
this was the message tha I received.

This indicates software damage to the disk.
ScanDisk may be able to recover all your date:
but if this happens again you may need to
replace the drive.
