R-Clk them in that START menu, & select Properties. Do they look like
these, in the Shortcut tab...

Target: C:\WINDOWS\SCANDSKW.EXE
Run: Normal window

Target: C:\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.EXE
Run: Normal window

Hello Richard,

Do I understand your message correctly that when you click
on the shortcuts to which you have referred, the
applications do not run?
Right-click on those shortcut files and then click on
Properties. On my system the ScanDisk shortcut points to:
C:\WINDOWS\SCANDSKW.EXE
and the Disk Defragmentor shortcut points to:
C:\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.EXE

You can do a sear_ch for the file scandskw.exe and for the
file defrag.exe (Start/Find/Files or Folders...). If you
find them, they ought ussually to be in the above
mentioned path. Once you locate those files you can
double-click on the file to start the application.

If you are missing those files then run "System File
Checker" (SFC)
(START/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System
Information/Tools/System File Checker).
Ensure in SFC's "Settings" that it is configured to check
for deleted files.
If the Scandisk and Defrag files have been deleted you can
restore them using SFC, from Windows\Options\Cabs.

However, the best m_anner in which to run Defrag_ is to
run Scandisk and then Defrag, both in Safe mode and with
the Screen Saver off.
To get into Safe mode switch on the computer and keep
pressing "F5" again and again until the computer starts
loading windows.
Another way to get into Safe mode is to switch on the
computer and keep pressing "F8" again and again until the
Startup menu appears, from which select number 3 - Safe
mode.
To return to normal mode, simply restart the computer from
the normal Shutdown menu.

Hope that helps.
