Slow boot up on a 6 month old hd?
Hi I'm running a Dell Dimension 8200 that I bought in 2001. About the
beginning of this year our hard drive gave us some problems, so we got rid of it and got a new one, a Western Digital 80gb. We installed the usual stuff on it, a lot of it being anti-problamatic programs (eg norton, zonealarm). Now, about 3 months ago we noticed that it started up pretty slowly. After the "windows is loading" screen, theres a blinking type cursor and it used to be there for around 5 seconds, but now it's 20. Also, after you log in, it might load the taskbar and startmenu and background, but it waits 10 seconds before it keeps going. This 'waiting issue also happens in other places like shutdowns. I'm positive it's not a virus or spyware, I try to take extremely good care of it and run scans every now and then. Defraging doesn't help a lot. Any one got ideas? Thanks Anthony |

Magic word - Norton!
Try disabling Norton for a while (offline) and see if that cures the problems. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Anthony" wrote in message ... Nope didn't work, still as slow
I'm not sure what you mean by 'disabling'- disable auto-protect, disable it from startup, I'm not sure. If you want me to disable it from starting up at all I'm not sure what to do, or which programs to choose in MSCONFIG Thanks Anthony "Noel Paton" wrote: Magic word - Norton! My preference would be to uninstall it completely! - but I appreciate that
you may not feel the same way try creating a bootlog (pick Option 2 from the Startup Menu) - and have a look there for anything that shows as 'failed' or is slow. Unfortunately, my favourite tool for inspecting bootlogs is no longer available, seemingly - but if you want me to have a look, then email the entire file to me (C:\Bootlog.TXT) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Anthony" wrote in message ... Ahah! - thanks, Mart!
The original program appears to have been sold, and is now part of a commercial suite - so I'm not sure of the provenance of this download, although it appears to be the correct file (at least at the moment!) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Mart" wrote in message ...
