Default windows install folder

I have something really wierd. The windows folder from c
drive has been deleted and replaced by individual folders
on the c drive as "dir0001", "dir0002" and so on, about
40 in all. Needless to say the pc has crashed, any ideas.
Thanks

*Personally* I'd just boot to DOS, backup the stuff I need, and format the
drive..... then re-install Windows afresh ;o)

Hi Russ,

ScanDisk creates DIR000x directories when it finds
directory structures that are damaged beyond repair.
Considering the Windows folder is involved, I would go
along with Steven and perform a clean install using the link below.

Warning, make sure you have the product key available before
performing the format.

Default windows install folder

I've seen computers with this problem.

Below is the way I proceeded to resolve the problem:

1. Start-up with a Windows 98 start-up floppy (crea-
ted by your Windows;

2. Change to the c: drive with
C:

3. Change to the first of these directories, with
cd dir0001

4. Find if there is "win.com", with:
dir win.com

5. Is found any win.com file? If yes, go to 5a, if
not, go to 5b.

5a. If is found any win.com file, do that:
cd ..
ren dir0001 windows

5b. If win.com isn't found, repeat steps 3-5 until
you found win.com and go to 5a, replacing dir0001 by
the names of the remaining directories.

6. Copy the boot files from the floppy to the hard
disk drive with:
sys a: c:

7. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL

8. Windows should start.

I hope this is all correct. I think you need to change
a reference to A:\RAMDRIVE.SYS in autoexec.bat to
C:\RAMDRIVE.SYS, but it's easy:
EDIT C:\autoexec.bat
And change the A: to C:.
Now close and save. Press ALT, followed by F to open the
FILE menu. Then use the arrows to select EXIT and press
enter. Now, you need to awnser to a message "Do you want
to save changes to ..." (or anything such that). Awnser
YES or SAVE (I don't know what is the name shown in the
button.).

There may exist problems, because this process was done
with Windows ME, and I never did it with windows 98, but
it should work.

Note: I did that more than 2 times, and Windows ME
started up after this hard operation.
Note2: some programs shouldn't work and Windows should
give you some "File Not Found" errors. But you saved your
Windows. Now, you need to discover what was the correct
name for each directory.

Better yet, at the root directory:

DIR C:\win.com /s

Assuming of course that the floppy is kept safe from any magnets/magnetic
forces.
