particular thing I am doing when it happens. It can happen soon after start
up, while i am working on something or after a few hours of sitting around.

Hi,

Here are some causes of spontaneous reboots
The most common causes:
Overheating (make sure your fans are all clean and operating)
Faulty or mis-matched RAM
Over clocking of the CPU
Computer virus. Perform a virus scan with up to date virus software
Spyware is another possible cause. Look he

The most accurate way of testing memory modules is to have them
tested on a memory modual tester. In my experience I have found
software testers to be inaccurate.

Try switching RAM sticks if there is more than one
Use one stick, then another. Only one at a time, of course.
If both sticks work alone but will not work when combined, that almost
certainly indicates an incompatibility between the two sticks.
If one stick works but the other does not, then that would indicate the one
that doesn't work is either faulty, will not get along with the other stick,
or
is not the correct type for your system.

Other less common causes:
A faulty or un-grounded power supply to the computer
Incorrect voltage setting on the motherboard
Improperly configured setting
Loose power connectors or cables
Fluctuations in power to the system
Athlon based computer with less than a 300W power supply
UPS with a dead or disconnected battery
