How do I buy 1 Sun Java 5 license
I need to buy 1 Sun Java 5 license to continue internal safety and external
security testing on Windows 98 Second Edition. I tried calling Oracle and they said contact Sun. I contacted Sun and they said contact their partner network. I contacted their partner network and no response. In addition, I asked for a price and no price given. Please help me from continuing to get the run around. I would like to stop just spinning my wheels. |

There are no "single user" licenses that I know about, JAVA 5 "support" is only offered via rather expensive contracted bulk purchase. IF your intent is to test Win98SE in a home user environment, then the testing would only benefit from using the JAVA freely available to other Win9X home users. You may find a University or similar which might offer it to students in computer or related courses, or within the enterprise/corporation/other where you work. Otherwise, were you a programmer/developer [as might be needed for actual testing purposes]: http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/core/index.jsp http://developers.sun.com/downloads/ JDK 5.0 Source Code & Licensing Overview http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/source_license.html -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

Who exactly is paying you to perform internal safety and external security testing on win-98? And are you not aware of this: -------------------------- Java for Business http://www.sun.com/software/javaforb...t_download.jsp J2SE 5.0 has EOL'd To ensure uninterrupted and immediate access to critical fixes, a license for Java for Business is highly recommended. Get Java for Business JDK/JRE (v1.4.2, 5.0, and 6) Not registered for JFB Download Center Access? If you do not have a Java for Business Download Center, please register here, then later return to sign in for this offering. Java for Business offers four levels of entitlement * JFB Access Only * JFB Standard * JFB Premium * JFB Premium+ Java for Business v1.4.2 Access Only Offering Java Standard Edition version 1.4.2 reached its end of life in late 2008 which means security updates/fixes are no longer publicly available. However, customers who purchase the Java for Business v1.4.2 Access Only program will continue to receive security updates and critical fix updates until 2013! To purchase the Java for Business v1.4.2 Access Only Offering visit: Global Specials. ------------------- The "Global Specials" link does not work (ha ha). The last public available version of Java runtime engine was update 22. There *are* update versions beyond that (up to 25 I think) but you need to be a "Java for business" customer to get them. If you purchase one of those "Java for Business" products and can access those Java updates, please upload them to fileden so the rest of us can also get our hands on them. |

How do I buy 1 Sun Java 5 license
Oracle is very screwed up when it comes to this "Java for Business"
thing. I was on this page: http://www.sun.com/contact/sales.jsp And started an on-line chat session with their pre-sales dept. Here's a transcript of the chat (I gave myself the name "Joe Resu", which naturally is bogus): -------------------------------- Joe Resu: I was on this page: Joe Resu: http://www.sun.com/software/javaforbusiness/getit.jsp Joe Resu: and the link for "get it now" Joe Resu: http://globalspecials.sun.com/store/...ctID.140434000 Joe Resu: does not work. Yvonne Torres: one moment let me check Joe Resu: How much is the access-only service for java for business? Yvonne Torres: i Apologize...but we don't have access to that information..I would suggest you contact our local representative to assist you Yvonne Torres: may i ask which country are you chatting us from? Joe Resu: USA Yvonne Torres: hold on Yvonne Torres: please call..1-800-786-0404 (Product Sales) 1-800-722-4SUN(4786) (Service/Solutions) Joe Resu: Does oracle not sell the "Java For Business" products directly to end users or customers? Yvonne Torres: we do sell it Yvonne Torres: directly.. Joe Resu: but you can't tell me the price? Yvonne Torres: Sir, you have actually reached a pre-sales line for hardware Joe Resu: Is there a chat service for Java? Yvonne Torres: no we dont...you would need to call our local sales people Yvonne Torres: are you planning to acquire the Java for business support or the licensing? Joe Resu: support - to download updates to Java runtime 5. (no response) Joe Resu: ok, I'll call support (I end the session) --------------------------------- Can't say that this impresses me. |

Thank you MEB. There may be no way around this other than your solution. I had only hoped to try out as many variable points of weaknesses within Sun Java 5 on 98 SE and see how it compared to the latest free Sun Java 5 version and if indeed Sun Java 5 allowed vulnerabilities to hit Windows 98 SE through the vulnerable attack points that it can hit thorough with say Windows XP. This just interests me as a security researcher. |

There are Java JRE updates for version 5 beyond the last freely available version (version 22). The newer updates (now up to version 25 I think) most likely exists because of security patches. If you don't test version 25, then you won't be testing the most current version. |
