Default Open With List Question

As I already stated in my reply to your previous thread on August 20:
That KB article and those registry keys do not apply to Win98/98SE. The open with
list is taken from the list of registered programs. You need to remove references
to said programs. What program names are showing up that you wish to remove?

From MS MVP Ron Badour's tip pages:
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/tips_r_-_z.html

"REMOVING OBSOLETE PROGRAMS FROM OPEN WITH LIST. Remove the associated file types
and the associated applications should disappear. Open Explorer, View, Options,
File Types, highlight the file type and click remove. If you still use the file
type but with a different application, you will have to add the file type back so be
sure to check out the information closely before deleting it. Note: While this is
the preferred method, I've removed the entry by doing a registry search on the
application name as it appears in the Open With list and deleting it. If the file
extension is no longer being used, you will have to search for and remove it from
the registry also."

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered--I had a hard drive
crash since then but I'm now back online. I can't find any answers when I
scroll through the posts. Anyway...

I've got old, deleted programs which still show up on the Open With list. I
can't remove them and I
can't find them in the Registry.

I've tried the method described in MSKB 258860 but it doesn't work because
there are no entries in the right pane window at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList. It just says "value not set".

I also tried another method which involves going to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\nnn\OpenWith (where nnn is the file extension) but I can't
find entries there either.

Is there an easier way to find these program remnants and finally delete
these from the Open With list?

Default Open With List Question

Thanks for the reference to your first reply. I was searching for my
original post of the 19th.

I didn't notice any disclaimer that the KB article didn't apply to Win98SE,
bit it was a late night KB search. I see that I have some registry searching
to do. Found one program called Mp3gain, deleted it and the reference in
the Open With. Thanks again for the tip. .

Default Open With List Question

Have you been deleting program folders to get rid of software, instead of
uninstalling via Add\remove Programs? That's a no-no, and will leave such remnants
all over.

BTW, in all MSKB articles at the bottom of the page is the "Applies To" heading,
which states what OS's the article applies to; in the case of the article you read,
it was for:
.. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
.. Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
.. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
.. Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

The Applies To info is *usually* accurate.....though not always.
