Default Problem with W98 seeing ethernet

Setup:
radio broadband via OSBridge connected to ethernet hub;
one hub connection to Intellon ethernet over mains (wireless won't go
through our walls);
scenario 1: laptop running 98 with xircom PCMCIA ethernet card booted whilst
connected to local hub (not same as above) which is connected to mains
ethernet. RESULT no problem.

scenario 2: laptop ditto booted without ethernet connection; connection made
when OS running. RESULT link not established (no lights on card).

scenario 3: laptop ditto booted with direct connection to mains ethernet;
RESULT link established.

scenario 4: different laptop with XPHome and integral ethernet port
connected directly to mains ethernet; RESULT no problem.

My aim is to connect the 98 laptop to the internet via direct mains ethernet.

Help please :-(

OOps scenario 2 should read 'link NOT established'

Try winipcfg.exe and Release and Renew.
