finding a lost directory
This isn't really a Windows question, but I don't know where I would find the answer. Maybe you know the answer or where to find it. How do I find a directory that was lost when I unzipped a file to it? Using windows 98 and Winzip, I unzipped a zip file to "here", the same directory in which the zip file was located, E:\download. The moment I did that, the whole Download directory disappeared. Norton Undelete didn't find it. I think the FAT entry was overwritten rather than that anything actually "deleted" it. I haven't written to the E: partition since then, and there are no Windows icons in it (the ones that appear on the screen change their date, fwiw, whenever they are clicked on.) I'm thinking with Norton Diskedit, I can set the directory entry, or its entry in the FAT back the way it was beforehand, but I'm pretty sure I need advice. (I have a backup for part of the Download directory, but not the most recent entries.) Thanks. Meirman -- If emailing, please let me know whether or not you are posting the same letter. How do I find a directory that was lost when I unzipped a file to it? Never mind. It's been lost for 18 months, but I just found it! Somehow e\download got moved and became a sub-directory under e:dos, which was the directory one line above c:\download. I don't know how unzipping to "here" could have caused this, but it's immediately after that that I noticed it was missing and searched for it. The only thing I can imagine is that with a mistaken mouse-move, I moved the directory *before* I did the unzip, and didn't realize I had done anything unusual. A little strange since I had to go to that Download directory to find the file I wanted to unzip. 160 files and 200 megabytes. I'm glad I got them back. Unzipping probably didn't cause it. More likely an accidental mouse
movement - it's very easy to do and not notice. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "meirman" wrote in message ... I"ve issued an order that all my mice attend precision classes starting tomorrow at 5:30 AM. They will be trained for both day and night duty. Any suspected of collaborating in the "accidental" mouse movement will be subject to disciplinary action, including imprisonment, loss of rank, and dismissal. Others that fail to perform adquately after training will be transferred to other duties. Meirman -- If emailing, please let me know whether or not you are posting the same letter. Next time re-open your zip app, the last unzipped archive should be listed.
Select the files to unzip and note where it defaults to unzipping them. ( Don't actually unzip them.) Check the noted path to see if that's where the files are at. -- Brian A.
