File Associations
I am trying to open a .mp3 or .wma using Windows Explorer
by double clicking on the file. I am getting an error message "Cannot find the file C:\PROGRAM- Files\Windows Media Player.........." I have Windows Media Player installed in "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player|........." If I right Click in the file I get the following options Play Open Play With Media Player Note, "Play With Media Player" is bold indicating default when double clicked. If I select "Play" or "Open", Windows Media Player starts OK with the correct associated file. If I double click or select "Play With Media Player", I get the error message. I checked file associations and all seems OK. I also tried "Open With", selected "wmplayer", and checked the box "Always use this program to open this type of file". Double Clicking or "Play With Media Player" always defaults to the wrong directory. Please note, I once created this directory "C:\PROGRAM- Files" while backing up some files. The directory has since been deleted and not used for some time. Can anybody advise how I can change the association in the double click or right click popup item "Play With Media Player" from C:\Program- Files to C:\Program Files. Thanx Ted Belben |

You say you checked File Associations and all was OK. You actually checked the
command for "Play with Media Player" and it says: "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /p (ending switch may vary from one filetype to another.) Or does the command say: "C:\PROGRAM- Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /p In any case, I'd probably use REGEDIT. StartRun REGEDIT enter. Use Find from the Edit menu in Regedit to locate every instance of "PROGRAM- Files" and change it to "Program Files". Note that in neither case should you actually use the quotes I used here. Yes, the full command needs quotation marks, but not this procedure. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x "Ted Belben" wrote in message ... Thanks Gary
Looks like some of the file paths listed in the registry are incorrect "PROGRAM- Files" instead of "Program Files". Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur ren tVersion\Apps Path\ (Various Applications) I corrected the Windows Media Player key, however I found several more to be corrected. The other applications seem to be working OK, however I will deal with them on an as needed basis should I find conflicts. I also noticed some keys are Progra~1. I am not sure which directory these make reference to. I do not know how this could have happened as it I do not recall installing software into this temporary directory. If you have any insight on this problem and the Progra~1 reference, it would be appreciated. Thanks again Ted ____________________ -----Original Message----- You say you checked File Associations and all was OK. In short, Progra~1 is the 8.3 DOS file name convention. In short, Windows can use
LFN's (Long File Name's) while DOS only uses ( 8+3 ), 8 characters for the name + 3 for the extension. If you are not having any more problems leave it be. -- Brian A.
