Cut out after start up
I've recently upgraded my memory from 192Mb to 512Mb (old
memory removed). Now when I start up Windows loads, the desktop appears and I can start any program, but about 5 min after start up the computer cuts out then immediately restarts itself but, because it wasn't shut down properly, goes through the scan disc routine, re loads Windows and off we go again without any more problems and the computer will work OK. Has anybody any idea why the first shut down occurs ? Grateful for any help, it's driving me mad. |

Spontaneous restarts are usually due to heat (dirt clogging up cooling fins on
heat sinks, fans not operating properly, air pathways obstructed), or to improper seating of components, corrosion of contacts, etc., or a simply faulty component. The most obvious possibilities in your case are dirt or corrosion in RAM sockets, or not being fully seated (warming up after starting causes the contacts to move in relation to one another--or, most likely of all, you got BAD RAM. Not uncommon to have RAM go bad right out of the box, especially with the type of error you report. Open up the case, check around for anything you might have dislodged during your last visit, pull the RAM, make sure RAM and socket are clean, check CPU and any other heat sinks/fans for dirt, put it all back together, and if that doesn't affect the problem, ask for warranty replacement on your RAM. -- Gary S.
