Default ndiswan cannot be installed any longer

installing VPN adapter via control panel/software/windows setup does not do
the trick. Installing windowsme from the setup CD doesn't help either.
Instead I get
the following hints from several log and txt files:

setupapi.log: layout1.inf is defective = error 0x800b0003. certclas.inf is
missing.

netlog.txt: * PNP8387: couldn't find a compatible driver. NOT PnP Device.

detlog.txt: ROOT\NET\0003:
status=8000621 problem=12

All the ndiswan files that are mentioned in the ndiswan.inf file are present
in the windows/system folder. Most of them are dated 08.06.00 17.00. The
only ones with an actual date are cfgwiz.dll and ndswan16.dll.

Which one of the drivers may be incompatible or defective. Those still
having the original date (08.06.00) seem to be o.k. But you never know. Are
there any other files besides those mentioned in the inf file that may be
the cause. I don't recall having deleted any file except those from AOL
(including the respective AOL-entries in the registry).

Anybody out there who has had similar problems or who has expert knowledge?
I strongly suspect that some entry in the registry causes this dilemma.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the DUN from Add/Remove
If that doesn't clear it, try uninstalling your Modem(s) while in Safe
Mode - and any devices which have error flags in Device Manager a the same
time
