Hangs - among other things!
I have had Windows ME since it came out and I still
strugle to get it working. I am constantly having the programs hang, and error messages, .dll messages, programs will close in the middle of them. Is there someone who knows how to check what is wrong? I have tried to reinstall the software completely, and installed all of the updates, but it still has not helped. I even purchaed a program to check the registry (which found several problems) but it is still having the same problems. I have McAfee (Online update)installed, Office XP installed and am afraid to install anyhing else back on until I can get this issue resolved! It takes me forever, between the restarting, freezing, etc. to get anything done! My computer and I need HELP! Thanks! |

Just for grins, try this: Right click on your "My Computer" icon (on the
desktop) and select Properties, you should get the System Properties window and then select the Performance tab. At the bottom you will see three 'buttons', the middle one being Graphics, left click on it and you will get the Advanced Graphics Settings window. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to one notch above "None" and OK out. (don't remember if you have to reboot for the change to take place, but, reboot anyway) See if that stops your random freezing. If so, you need to check into updated video/mouse drivers or possibly a different video card. (Simply repeat the procedure, to move the slider back when needed) Heirloom, old and let us know "PAB" wrote in message ... Well, that didn't work. Unfortunately! Also whenever
restart is selected, the computer hangs then goes into the "blue screen" with the "Warning" the system is busy or has become unstable. (I know exactly how it feels! All of this is making me feel unstable!) When this screen comes up it says to pre ctrl alt del but when I do that nothing happens. The only way to get the computer to shut down is to manually shut it down. Then when it restarts, McAfee says that it has started in "safe mode" and must restart in order for computer to be protected. Which I have to go through the same thing again to do that! YIKES! Any sugestions? -----Original Message----- Just for grins, try this: Right click on your "My Computer" icon (on the desktop) and select Properties, you should get the System Properties window and then select the Performance tab. You say you've been struggling to get ME running stable ever since it first came out. That's a long time to live with such frustration. If you're 100% certain your system is free from viruses, trojans, spyware and other unwanted guests, I would suspect your problem is hardware related. Overheating, failing/faulty RAM, an unstable PSU can all cause the symptoms you describe. As a first step I would recommend downloading Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, Spybot 1.3 from www.safer-networking.org and CWShredder from www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Be sure to get the latest definitions. If after running the above progs your system comes out totally free from nasties, I would definitely suspect a hardware issue. HTH -- "Once in a while, I'm standing here, doing something. And I think, What in the world am I doing here? It's a big surprise." |
