It is not clear to me what is wrong or what you have tried. However,
I THINK you are saying that Windows does not work in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode. The obvious next step is to reinstall Windows into a new empty folder. The following article explains how to install Windows into a new folder: How to Install Windows 98 to a New Folder [193902] http://support.microsoft.com/support...s/193/9/02.asp Information about reinstalling is also on www.windowsreinstall.com. I have searched the bootlog.txt and found in the last 4 lines the following
text: [000EEBBF] STARTING UNKNOWN (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [000EEBBF] STARTING UNKNOWN (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [000EEBC1] ENUMERATING INKNOWN (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [000EEBC1] ENUMERATING INKNOWN (HTREE\RESERVED\0) Maybe this is the problem? Can you boot normally if you click Cancel at the name/pw input window?
If you're the only user, in Safe Mode search for *.pwl, remove any that don't have your user name and reboot. If it still won't boot to Windows using your name/pw boot back to SM and remove all .pwl files and reboot. Type in a new username and pw if you wish, or just type in a name leaving the pw blank and clicking OK, NOT Cancel. *Note: If you have user profiles this will not work as stated in the article and you will have to perform the steps in the link provided in the article for user profiles. How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q152104 It has also been advised that you do not use the article Q135586, which has a link included in the article. Its purpose is “to clear the User Name logon box so it is blank each time you start Windows, it is not meant to prevent the logon box from prompting you for a name/password. Instead if you have TweakUI installed, check to make sure the “Clear Last User At Logon check box is not checked. Go to Start Settings Control Panel, double click Tweak UI, click the Paranoia tab, if the box is checked, uncheck it. Read thsi if you insist on using a pw for 98. Although there are different ways to accomplish this, there is always a possibility that someone with some computer savvy can bypass them. One way is to set a password in the bios if the option is available. Anyone that knows how to get into the BIOS and is familiar with them can easily remove the password unless the BIOS is password protected as well and others have no way to get insude the box to reset the BIOS defaults. Another way to set a password is suggested he http://registry.winguides.com/display.php?629 MVP Doug Knox has a way on his site as well: http://www.dougknox.com/ Click on Security Prevent Unauthorized Users from accessing your computer. Read the instructions fully, it is possible to lock yourself out of your own computer. -- Brian A.
