SCANREG /OPT ?
What do you mean by a "manual compact" of the registry?

(if you meant deleting some entries (which is pretty dangerous, by the way)
that, in and of itself, does NOT compact the registry) Bill in Co. wrote: What do you mean by a "manual compact" of the registry? Kentiguous wrote: Is SCANREG /OPT reliable, or would it be safer to do a manual compact of the registry? Ken -- Remove the '4' to reply via email |

Scanreg /opt is perfectly safe--as safe as a "manual" compact. Scanreg
/opt /fix is good, too. Of course, *all* such operations have their weak moments, so you should make sure you have a current backup, first. By Manual Compact, you mean the old Export/Import trick? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Kentiguous" wrote in message ... OK... I bet it's some third-party "Compact Registry" feature, i.e.
Scanreg /opt by another name, g. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Bill in Co." wrote in message ... I'll take the export, delete and then import it method to mean 'manual'
side in this bet if you'll allow. There are a lot of really old sites out there, tune up tips for Win3.1 and 95 everywhere with no apologies either. Site last updated date most telling sometimes as to whether or not to take the advise given much credit. |

In that it runs automatically without user intervention, I think that
suggests that it is pretty reliable. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Kentiguous" wrote in message ... OK, I lose the bet!
At any rate, I think your idea might compact it better, but it may be a bit overkill - why not just use the more recommended, "scanreg /opt" a couple of times, and see how much that works for ya. I do this on occasion: "scanreg /opt /fix" (I run two or three times), and it usually compacts it a fair bit. And I think it would be faster (and perhaps safer), than the export/import (like if there was a power failure in the middle, or whatever). Kentiguous wrote: Bill in Co. wrote : What do you mean by a "manual compact" of the registry? A "REGEDIT /E myreg.reg", followed by a "REGEDIT /C myreg.reg" (from a DOS boot; after making a backup, of course g). Yes, when Scanreg detects there is 500 kb of space, it automatically
compacts the registry. http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/registry.html for details on the registry -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Kentiguous" wrote in message ...
