Won't see 2nd HD: Win98 problem?
I recently acquired a new-to-me computer - a Compaq Presario with an AMD
533MHz processor. I tried all weekend to install the hard drive from my old machine as a slave to avoid having to move all my files over. But I keep getting the same problem: when I open My Computer, I see another HD, but it's a mirror image of the C drive! Would this be a Win98 issue? Or a Compaq bios issue? Ed |

It's all not that hard. ~Q |

Or it may simply be that because it is a Compaq, it simply won't handle
a second drive properly. If it's not a Compaq drive, it may *never* handle that drive properly. It's a known issue in older Compaqs. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Q" wrote in message . com... Ouch! Thanks for the support, Gary! G The drive that came with the
machine is a Quantum Fireball lct10 30G. The second is a 2.6G from an old Pentium IBM machine. All I wanted to do was slave it in so I don't have to try and move all my files over by floppy (the older machine did not know what burning a CD was!). Any hints along these lines would be greatly appreciated. Ed "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Or it may simply be that because it is a Compaq, it simply won't handle a second drive properly. Instead of slaving it, see if it will be properly recognized as the
Secondary Master. Of course, there always the basics--proper jumpers, proper recognition by BIOS. I forget the BIOS layout in Compaq. All I remember is that it's usually F10 to get in there. While it is usually recommended that you use "Auto" for IDE settings, you may need to manually configure the drive. The "mirroring" effect is an odd one. Doesn't give me much hope. The alternative method of putting the Fireball into the old machine isn't likely to work, either. Next solution that occurs to me would be a Direct Cable Connection cross-over serial cable between them, or even a standard LAN networking. Cross-over DCC would probably be the cheapest if you don't already have any LAN equipment. Slow as dried snot, but feasible. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Ed" wrote in message ... Ouch!
