Default Modem Settings conflict

Hi,

First, its good to see this group still kicking on M$'s server, but
other group works fine too.

Now, my modem has been bombing out of late, cutting my connection short.

Under 'Dev Manager' Ports (Com & Lpt) Communications Port, I highlight
the one my modem is using, then Properties Port Settings, I see that my
data transfer rate is set to 9600bps, yet when I go to 'Control Panel'
Modems General Properties, I see my speed (bps) is set at the maximum,
ie, 115200bps.

Could this be causing a conflict?

For as long as I can remember, the 115200bps has always been that way,
and must admit I've never looked at the other before, and its only
because of the bombing-out that I went checking all settings.

No new hardware or software has been added recently, and Avast has
always had the Mail Protection enabled. (I say this because I read
something elsewhere recently that this can cause modem drop-outs, but in
my case its been like this for over 5 years with no problems.)

98SE, 512Ram.

What kind of modem...hardware or Winmodem? What brand and model?

Software modems usually set a virtual COM port and the settings listed
under the Modems entry in CP are what is followed. If the Ports
category in DM also shows the port (COM3, for example), the settings
shown there aren't followed......but it won't hurt to set them to match
the settings under Modems.

That said, I doubt the discrepancy is affecting your connection being
dropped.

There is absolutely no reason to enable Mail Scanning in any anti-virus
app, and enabling it not only slows the email connection but can cause
email corruption in many email clients. The Email Scanners are included
to satisfy the misguided requests from users....even Symantec has
documentation explaining why it is not needed, although they include the
module to appease users. Your email is scanned like any other file,
with the resident background scanner.

My connection is via DUN and my modem is a V90 External, Rockwell.
Manufacturer is Puretek. It is running on Com Port 2.

I'll reset the Device manager version to 115200 on next re-boot.

That said, I doubt the discrepancy is affecting your connection being

Will keep you posted if new setting works, probably later tonight.

I'm sure it's best to stick with glee &/or Zabcar should he drop in.
Nevertheless...

Check the phone/modem wires are secure in their slots, & gently clean
the connectors. If that doesn't get it, post your modem log...

"Control Panel, Modems, General tab, Highlight the modem in question,
Properties button, Connection tab, Advanced button, View Log button"

(1) If you are checked "Append to log" there,
post just the last session or two.
(2) Mine is unchecked at the Connection tab
for "Disconnect a call if idle...".
(3) If you have more than one modem showing
at the General tab - but you've only got one
physical modem connected - remove (at least)
the extra one & reboot.

Under 'Dev Manager' Ports (Com & Lpt) Communications Port, I

highlight

my
data transfer rate is set to 9600bps,

That's interesting. My PCTEL Platinum V.90 Modem doesn't show up there.
It shows up in its own Modem category -- & with more tabs in its
Properties than shows up when accessed through the Control Panel. The
tabs in common seem to have identical values. The modem uses COM2 & is
set at the maximum 115200 bps.

Under Ports (COM & LPT), I just show...
Communications Port (COM1)
ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

COM1 is set at speed 9600 bps, but as high as 921600 seems to be
available.

yet when I go to 'Control Panel'

I'm willing to believe glee &/or Zabcar on that.

I have avast! Home Edition v.1368 installed with Internet Mail, Standard
Shield & WEB Sheild running. It has peccadilloes, but seems to be
innocent of connectivity foul play. There was a scan engine version of
McAfee that would cause me to lose the internet connection, & I had to
revert back to an earlier version -- but McAfee is all gone for me now.

I set the lower one to match the higher one, so they are both running at

even went out for a few hours, and when I came back I was still connected.

Well, well...maybe that was it after all....that would be nice.

Franc Zabcar didn't post in your thread, that's why you don't see it.
